If you want to convert vids some software will be needed, but the problem is that it will use a lot of resources. It's better to do that at home on your own "dedicated server" rather than the one you got a small account with.

I have a few clients that do it this way.

You Definitely want a Dedicated Box for a video site. As far as the software needed, it depends what your needs are, streaming? Flash Players? Downloads, etc.

Absolutely NOT,

Whatever site you want to run, it should be up to YOU to provide suitable software not your host provider.

Hosting companies only provide extra bells and whistles to drag in newbie clients who won't be using much of the resources.

There are things that can't be installed in a typical shared hosting account (require root etc).

That being said, hosts don't have to provide anything that isn't specifically advertised.

Hello,

Thats true, I agree chrishirst. If you need to install customized applications/software, it isthe responsibility of the user and not the hosting provider but necessary modules supported extensions for the applications can be installed by them.

Secondly, you can have restrictions on the shared hosting environment depending on what you actually use. You can also try VPS services. Checkout with the TOS and FAQ's of the specific provider before ordering the plan.

Please let me know in case you have any more question, I will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

You may have cheap VPS solutions from A2hosting.com. They have started to provide then starting from $17 per month. But they are self-managed. Do you have enough experience for their management?

I think that for the video the best solution not VPS or semi dedicated. Because video market always abrupt and your needs might me not welcome on the VPS or semi

Couldn't agree more. A dedicated server is needed.
