okay i have done a quick google search and have not found any webhosting blogs giving information about webhosts etc and wondered if it was a niche market at the moment

it came to my attention because there was loads of people here and other places asking who is the best one to go to as no body really knows and it depends on what you need but if i made a website giving a list of loads of webhosts and a summary of them etc i wondered if it would prove sucesfull or not

any ideas and anyone know of any sites already doing this

1. maintaining a huge list all by yourself would be a lot of work. Hosts quickly change offers, or disappear.
2. a huge list just creates more confusion. with tens of thousands of hosts out there, the main problem for customers is to choose one.
3. there are lots of sites (not blogs, but other types of sites) that list hosting companies and information about them. Some list thousands of hosts.

You need to offer something special. Maybe that special thing is already mentioned in your post, but I failed to see it.

urrm okay yeah there are alot of hosts but i was going to pick 20 or something and review them all it is alot of work but im prepared for that :P i do need something special and unique and will think on that

That's begs the question how you can honestly "review" them if you have no direct experience using their services. http://www.whreviews.com has done something along this line by extracting forum posts about a variety of hosts

Like others have said, it's a saturated niche. Not only is hosting hypercompetitive, but the hosting reviews industry is as well. You've got tophosts.com, thewhir.com, hostreviews.com, and about 20 other .coms that review hosts. Of course, there are also the .nets, the .orgs, the .cas,the .whatevers.

The only thing I can think of that would make your blog unique is if you focused on the hosts for a region, but I don't know if it would take off since hosting really isn't region-specific (other than continental and in some cases country).

If you have nice content about hosting nothing bad to go for blogging, blog will help you in many ways to promote your website.

I'm also wondering how you'll become recognised as an authorative source of information on this subject without spending a fortune on hosting at a number of different providers.

The only way to know what a hosting provider is really like is to host your important site(s) with them - even then, a review of anything (particularly hosting) is always going to be highly subjective. The most important point is that different people have different needs and expectations from their webhost - otherwise when someone asks the usual "which is the best host" question there'd be just one answer.

It's much more complicated than that, and the "best" provider will depend on many factors - a lot of which you can't begin to imagine as just one person with one set of needs (i.e. the easy one to consider from someone else's point of view is budget, but beyond that you can't know a good RoR host if you've no interest in RoR, and can't know a good Managed VPS provider if you love managing your own servers... lots of things like that are difficult for one person to cover comprehensively enough to be recognised).

I don't think there is a niche for that. So many companies offer different hosting services and can be confusing a bit.

There are lot of review sites and even blogs, i have seen... so i doubt whether your idea is new , its pretty difficult to find any new ideas on the web these days, But there are niches with minimum exposure, u knw wot i mean

I think that it is possible to do very interested blog to read about web hosting. But I think that you have to understand that you will need full time to create very interesting content for your potential readers. If you attract visitors because of your content - you rich your goal.

If you want to create quality hosting blog you need to write good content... and that means to have experience in journalism... or at least in authoring.

It's quite clear but a good web hosting company for blogging must be chosen correctly as well.

Erm isn't that what http://www.tophosts.com/ helps with? As for a niche of blog hosts; why?

I like the idea of running a blog for a particular (big) company. Do you read Dreamhost.com blog? It's really good.

The blog cnsists 1-2% of postmakers - and others are commet writesrs and readers. As many postmakers your blog have as poular and atractive your forum is.
