Mine is Hostmonster, because they give a domain for life, and are really cheap. If your smart, you wont really care about their support, as long as they're performing their duties well.

Many hosting companies give free domains for life. Cheap is usually not the best option. And why do you think you'll never need support?

Its not that I will never need support, its that I dont need support as often as many people make it look like they do. It seems that Hostmonster has its days, but Im sort of lucky, and when I need support, its not on one of those days.

Our company providing web hosting services since year 2000 but the fact you've never heard about us means only you have no idea about web hosting industry and came here to promote (drop link) company that pay you or give you something in return to promote them.
Why Am I saying that? Simple. You made 4 posts to make your point

Free hosting is ok, but it doesnt have the sense of ownership to it. Also, sometimes they dont allow u to put up ads, or even make the site complicated. But hey, whatever works for you man.

As for utility - webhostingtalk.com for sure. But as for webdesign I have some and personaly think that it is first impression and it ios very important for the web hosting. But if web hosting company do not offer what it is promising. We desighn can't help in this case.

oversellling, overselling, overselling. These 3 words apply for some of the hosts you mentioned above. If was a customer I would go with Rackspace for server or Hostway for shared... There are many otehr good hosts of course. Just read their presentations and speak to their customer care department. Do not stare at disc space and bandwidth!

if support sucks, one time is enough
you'll see that the most important thing (or one of the most important ones) of a hosting company is support, not how many GBs of storage / traffic you're allowed to use

Get yourself WHC that has no more than 1,000 clients and I can promise you the best Tech Support ever.
If you smart, you'll stay away from hosts who take you for a moron with their oversellling garbage or undersellling ($3.00/momth) unlimited domains and MySQL's bull and find someone who is telling you truth.

For a general site most hosts will do if it is just basic HTML and not much more.
We find a lot of our clients are after specific features or technology i.e a seperate application pool, components, services etc.
The best way to choose your host, is to know exactly what you want to host first. Work out what scripts you want to run, Databases, what permission settings you will need, do you need to connect to remote services? Need certain ports open... then choose your web host.
If all you have is html and graphics and it is hobby try a free host first. If it is business then choose a host that has been in the business for a number of years. Dont be fooled by free bonuses and special offers - keep your focus on buying hosting and not freebies :-) .

i like free hosting, my friend gave me a domain name for free which i am really thankful, but before that i have looked for months and months at many many web hosts and i have never ever found a website that will give you a .com .net or .org domain for absolutly free, never ever, without their being a deal with you buying an ad or anything. if you find a free host, it'll ne a subdomain or a /yourname. youll never find a real .com .net or .org free domain name.
have any of you guys?

well basically a lot of those that talk about bad support are those who don't really know what they're doing
I've seen a lot of times people saying 'that company sucks', 'their support sucks' etc because that company wouldn't fix errors in their scripts, poorly coded pages or script configuration errors that they made...
this is not bad support, they're not your webmasters...they just provide you with a stable environment to run your sites, you can't ask anything more (I know, it's obvious, but a lot of people doesn't get it - or doesn't want to...)
most of the major hosts, as well as the minor ones, are good and will provide you with what you need
all the overselling discussion is kind of pointless if we don't talk about some specific aspects: stuffing a server with as many cyustomers as they can is wrong, and won't last long, or you'll get bleeding slow downloads/script execution times
overselling isn't bad if done using some brain...it must be seen from a marketing point of view, maybe a company can even loose on some customers that burn too much bandwidth, but these customers will probably tell their friends, or on forums or other sites that they're buring xxx gigs with that company and everything is ok...and new customers flow
in my opinion big companies can do it without penalizing the end user

Well now, with Hostway offering unmetered data transfer on most of their shared hosting packages, can we say they're not overselling?

People are asking us: how come you give us 10 – 20 times less than moron host “X”
but charge us the same?
The only reason these idiots overselling, is to make honest companies look bad in eye
of potential customers and I must admit they have succeeded in doing that.

Many hosts oversell and it is very difficult to find good one that do not overload their server with 1000 customers and then send you note for extensive use of CPU with 10 user on your site and ask you of you want to upgrade to VPS or Dedicated.
Hosts that i have found that do not oversell are Totalchoicehosting and Downtownhost.
