When looking at hosting companies, some make it clear that they use other's equipment, and some you can't tell (or I can't!). Is there some good way of finding out, and, I guess, should I care?

After the firewall fiasco with my current host I would almost lean toward using a reseller where in theory, the firewalls on their computers have been tested extensively as the client base is huge. Or, do resellers put up their own firewalls also?

As to your first question, ping thier domain name and get thier IP address. Once you have that goto http://www.dnsstuff.com and do a IP whois search to see who the IP is registered to. This will often give you the datacenter their server is at.

As for the firewall question, alot of resellers who are on dedicated servers use thier own firewall. This is a good thing cause it adds a layer of security to the server, but it can be a bad thing if the person managing thier server doesn't know how the firewall works all that well.
