He says 40GB minimum space - that means he'll consider dedicated servers with over 40GB of space.

I'm not an expert on dedicated servers (my client base hasn't yet reached that level), but I do know their price varies greatly depending on their spec. You can get cheap ones from like £50/month or so or pay anything up to £300/month (or even more) for top spec ones.

40GB is fairly low - 80GB is probably bog standard I'd say. You'll be looking at the bottom end of the market in this case.

For clarification: Sounds like 40 GB is the hard disc requirement, not ram.

I personally just ordered and received my server on Friday.
It's a IBM blade server, with 2 Xeon 3Ghz, 4 GB ram, and 2x80Gb hdd mirrored (so 80 Gb available), redundant power, 250Gb transfer per month and all the whistles.

I did had a price as a long time customer, and converting it to Euros is around 73€ per month.
A pretty good deal, I'd say, from data-center who was always there with support whenever I needed it and with a top expertise.

And if you found out this place, Martin, thanks for the deal.
Really! It's a very nice little monster you proposed me, and it does the job perfectly...

I was thinking about buying a server my self a few months ago but I would not have the skills to make sure it was always working properly. I was looking at one from dell €3,000 500GB 4GB Ram 1.8GZ.

I have plans for a few domains I just bought for what they would be used for a dedicated server would be needed a few host here in Ireland are looking at €100 a month for 80GB but the price sounds a bit pricey to me is €100 too much to be paying thats €1200 a year about $1900 a year

Bandwidth is expensive in Ireland, so you won't find cheap dedi. deals there! As you mentioned, a decent dedi will be a few k (keep this in mind, as some providers use cheaper kit which is more likely to fail/overheat etc.) and of course providers can always cut costs on things like transit e.g. Cogent and friends...

Barry, I believe your audience will not be from your country only. US location is great chance to have well loaded web site around the world.
If I were you I'd go for US located one. There are more powerful servers and datacentres and lots of good companies like HostV.com Hostgator
I think that would be wise at least to get your server in USA

It's much worse in Ireland... UK isn't so bad in comparison, and at least there's decent connectivity in the UK (much harder to find in Ireland).

How do data centers work? do I buy a server they set it up and manage it? in the long term my own server might be the best choice. I might have to go with an American hosting company till then the hosting price is a bit better and the currency convertion seems to take a bit off too.

I think that you have avoid considering DC you need provider which have a rack in that DC or own that and go with dedicated server - do not collocate your own. That migh be really big troubles.

It depends what you want...

You can lease a server from a datacentre, and included in the price is all of the necessaries like transit, power, cooling etc. The big benefit of this is that any hardware issues are their responsibility. The downside is that you have little control over the brand of hardware you get, and can have arguements about whether hardware issues exist or not... the obvious downside is also the cost (long term, much more expensive than buying your own hardware).

The other option is that you buy your own hardware, and look to put that into an appropriate facility. Here you have much more control (e.g. hardware is entirely your choice) and more providers + flexibility. There are a few ways of doing it, but for a single server you would usually get a package from a datacentre (or a provider with some rackspace in a datacentre) including all the necessaries such as power, cooling, and transit - but you may buy transit separately (usually you'd need at least 10Mbps before this is worth doing, so generally best to use providers transit instead of sourcing your own).

If you get your own hardware it's possible (but still potentially a pain!) to move it to another provider should you have any reason to do so.

Audiomad,

Based on the experience level that it sounds like you have you will want to go with a managed server which is going to cost you a good bit more then an unmanaged server.

The difference is that a managed server you will not need to work about updates or security while on an unmanaged server you will. Updates and Security is a really big deal and should be left to the experts for you sake and the your customers sake.

For sure, the blade cages are those who allow the most evolution, but they will cost you a lot since they take a lot of space.

I'd say, start simple. Take a 1U server, with a good CPU, a lot of RAM, and SCSI hdd mirrored.
If you need more, then buy a second one, and set up a round robin between the two, or sell back the first and buy a bigger.
