There are many, many hosts out there that offer what your looking for. off the top of my head, surpasshosting.com comes to mind. Carefull though, most companies offering a good amount of space/bw for low prices arn't usually the best to go with.

Try using a service like www.findmyhosting.com. Be sure to research any company your interested in first to be sure you won't get burned.

If you truely value your site, pay a little more and be sure your getting a good service.

There are the criteria that are usually recommended when looking for a new host:

A-Buy your domain (separately from the hosting plan)

B-Shop around a lot:

1- Do not take for granted the enthusiastic reviews you find on the webhosting directories (they get the commission for advertising their companies) or anywhere else.

2-When you find a host, look for:

1-terms of service must be posted on all pages and clearly visible before you buy;
2- look for testimonials (if they are all anonymous users, skip that host);
3-the "about us" must include a detailed history of the company, not just what they are doing at present;
4-look for certifications and awards (I CANN, Verisign etc); there must be demos of their control panel
5-try a company that also takes checks
6-if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't
7-There should be a 14- or 30-day money back guarantee

Good luck!

I would personally suggest Globat;

2.5gb space
2500 email accounts
75gb transfer
PHP, CGI, PERL, MySQL, Webmail, Control Panel, awstats, ftp.

thats 7.95 dollars, which is about £4 a month, or big discounts if you pay anually. I haven't yet experienced any downtime with my sites, and their customer support rocks... if you're in a hurry they've got live support too. Plus, they have a great affiliate programme - if you want to get me money follow the link in my sig then choose "recommended host" (OK, that was a cheap shot). But give them a look anyways, heres the link

I agree with you.

Reliable hosts have live support, and has to be within your reach, you don't have to go all the way through their knowledge base. Also look for a toll-free number and their legal address/ company phone with their "about us" / "contact" link.

Some have live chat now, so you can have a response in real time before you make that decision.

ARE THEY LATE?

Expect a direct response from support within 4-6 hours or so.

ACTS OF GOD (or less)

To avoid problems, many good hosts have use a diesel generator (look at plan comparison charts) to power up their site in case of failure. They also back up your files.
