Any reliable way to determine that a company is big?

Most of them are indeed pretty big.

I read somewhere that 1and1 was the largest.

A lot of the big well known hosts are the crummy ones that cost 6 bucks a month. But there are big business-to-business hosts that a lot of people have probably never heard of, the kind that sell colocation and CDN.

A large redundant company is 1and1, they did not suit my needs but maybe they will suit your's. Google!
