I need a new host, VPS hosting.
Not interested in fly by night mom and pop operations...
Can someone tell me who the top 10 or 15 largest hosting companies are, i used hostgator for years but there customer service sucks, and there billing is wack (they double billed me 2 months in a row)
I look forward to your input,
Brandon

I currently use servint.com and they are great. They were one of the first VPS companies back in the day. I have never heard anything bad about them. Plus they won't charge you to simple third party programs like other hosts do.

Hey Swate,
I have personally used http://vpsland.com/ and i can honestly say i have never had a problem with them. Also customer service experience was great. Also pretty good monthly prices aswell.
Best Regards,

"Largest" is a hard answer. It's more about what people's experiences are.
I've been using KnownHost for over 2 years (?) now and I highly recommend them.
Look at the solutions offered by these companies and check what's right for you.

I think Jaguarpc.com (plans with Interworx, Cpanel, DA) and Solidhost.com (you can get Cpanel for free at the moment) might be solid vps choices.

To be honest, the larger the company I feel, the less they will be connected to their clients.
You'll be better off looking for a registered company thats medium sized that will be able to fill your needs.

This is very true. When I think "large," I think DreamHost and BlueHost, and while I can do a BlueHost affiliate link drop (I know the rules, though!), I don't use them because I'm happier elsewhere.

You may find nice and cheap VPS deals from JustGotVPS.com, VPSlinks.com and GlobalTap.com. Think you may choose what you want from the variety of VPS plans that these companies provide. Linux, FreeBSD and Windows2000\2003 you may found there as well.

You can take a look at http://www.webhosting.info/webhosts/tophosts/global/ though it's mostly domain registrars that get the top spots, due to the huge numbers of parked domains they "host".

Large hosting providers have nothing to do with good quality - two of the larger companies that come to mind offering VPS's are 1&1 + GoDaddy, but the flood of customers we receive from them complete with corresponding horror stories tells me all I need to know about the quality of their service, and apparent lack of customer service.
As some others have mentioned, buying from the largest rarely means that you're buying from the best.
Also consider that in most cases these large providers built their business on something other than VPS hosting. This means that their position is probably a result of something else (e.g. domain registrations, dedicated servers etc.) which means their experience and expertise with VPS's may be a lot more limited than you may realise.
One of the larger VPS providers is probably MediaTemple. I believe they have over 10,000 VPS's. I can't say that I've heard anything good (or bad) about them of note, but with that number of VPS's they must be doing something right?
Overall, you should look for a provider with extensive experience in offering the particular service you require. So for a VPS that means a provider who has offered them for a long time, and knows the platform inside out.
Finally, don't forget that your choice of provider depends whether you want managed or unmanaged service: if managed, you have to be particularly careful when comparing offerings as service (as well as what's included) will vary from one to another.

I'd go for either - Servint if you want US based VPS hosting or WantingAWebsite if you want UK based web hosting - both of these companies are very good and their support is great

if it provides 24/7 support and has 100% up time, then it has good quality.

Sure, there are a lot of them.
ipowerweb.com, powweb.com, fatcow.com, and 25 other sites are all owned by Endourance International Group.
1and1.com is a 2+ billion per year publically traded hosting company
UK2.com is a large hosting company with over a million domain clients. They recently purchased my old company, midphase, last December.
RackSpace.com is filing for their IPO of over $300+ million soon.
iWeb.ca is a large, publically traded candian hosting company
ThePlanet.com is huge and operates a number of large data centers in Texas
And many more...

I do agree. I recommend taking a look at Liquid Web and Wired Tree.
