Though video and audio streaming is offered in the majority of plans, I guess that hosts usew the same servers for thes plans, so basically they offer web server streaming.
Who are the hosts offering streaming media server streaming?

If you are looking to do streaming content with a shared hosting company, check each TOS/AUP carefully, most of them limit your resource usage. Even if streaming is allowed by the host, you may only be able to get your content to a limited audience before the site is suspended, or site performance is degraded beyond being functional.

I do agree with you and I personaly think that this might be time wasting to look for such deals in the shared web hosting.

The differences between the Web server and streaming media server solutions translate into clear distinctions in both ease of implementation, ease of management, and quality of user experience. For the remainder of this white paper, the comparison will be between a generic Web server and Microsoft's streaming media server, Windows NT Server Windows Media Services (hereafter referred to as a Windows Media server).
The majority of hosts use web server streaming as this allows them to utilize the existing infrastructure, i've seen this in hostgator.com and serverpoint.com plans.

If it's on a web server I don't believe it's technically streaming at all, it's a progressive download, which isn't the same thing.
A progressive download video you can fast forward up to the point of the video that's downloaded so far, and not beyond. A streaming web video you can skip to any point in the video with just a couple seconds of buffering.
Very Good article. I know a hosting company that has a good visual walk through for the difference between Progressive and Streaming, but they deal primarily with Adult, probably best I don't post the link here, hehe.
I have seen on ServerPoint.com shared package plans many streaming features are offered to the clients of this company (Windows Media Player, RealAudio/Video, Quicktime, MPEG, and others (all via HTTP streaming)).
