I was wondering, how effective do you find web hosting directories? Do the new users really trust the rating of WHD for web hosting companies?.

Some of them are usefull and some arn't. Just submit to all that you come across, you've got nothing to lose. If you have to pay to get listed in the directory then you should do some research first to find out if it's worth it.

they work although users who use directories usually choose the cheapest webhost they come accross - thats why paid directories are generally better because there is less competition because the extremely cheap oversellers dont have the budget for them.

Webhosting Directories usually have too many webhosts in my opinion. It's too hard to pick one when there are about 1000 that fits your needs.

The directories are still good for Backward Links! You PR will be higher if you have more BL from different IPs.

Only popular directories are good like Yahoo and others
