Hello,
I am currently using php on a windows hosting plan. And i saw a hosting company on this site which is really good for me. (1dollar-webhosting.com)
But the problem is that its operating system is linux and it uses cpanel.
I don't know how to make a website on a linux hosting - Do i need to install the linux on my pc?
- Can't i just upload php files via an ftp program (like Filezilla) and make the site work on a linux hosting plan without knowing unix/linux?
- Do i need to know unix/linux commands? Is it hard?
Any help will be appreciated,
Thanks

For building php/mysql web site I think that you do not need to have any specific skills. Linux web hosting is always easy to manage for the customer.
And for PHP site you do not need windows web hosting whis is much more expensive.

in the order: 1) No, you don't have to change nor install anything on your computer 2) Yes, millions people do it like that every day 3) No, you don't need to. Shared accounts don't give you access to a shell anyway, so there is no way you could do it. If you are just doing PHP, then you can go on with your eyes closed. But, if you rely on sql server, or use .net or asp, then stay on a windows hosting plan.

Think of Linux shared Hosting as you would of Windows shared hosting. As far as the end user is concerned, they are both the same. You upload files with your trusty FTP program, manage files via a trusty control panel (cPanel as you mentioned) and there really is no need to install virtually anything on your home computer. Also, you do NOT need to know any Linux commands, on a simple shared hosting solution.
The only time one would ever need to know Bash commands, or rather "Linux commands", is when you are accessing shell. This, however, is rarely given out on shared hosting accounts. Rather, it is reserved for dedicated and VPS solutions.
On Shared and Reseller hosting, everyhting would function as it would via Windows Hosting. Simple point and click procedures. Cpanel is very easy to use, and learn.
As trip mentioned, the only reason you sohuld be on Windows Hosting, should be for it's different software, and languages. If you are not going to be using sql server asp or .net, there really isn't anything in widnows for you.

I wouldn't rather believe the company which has such a 'spamname', with hyphens in the domain...

Short Answers: - No.
- Almost correctly. If you do not have server administration rights You will not need to learn the linode to make your site working.
- Extra knowledge is very useful, even if you do not need it at the moment. You will not know if it is hard without trying it.

I think its depend on your requirement
If your webpage is static and implemented with average PHP codes with MYSQL database, then you can prefer LINUX hosting plans. If your webpage is designed with exclusive programming stuffs like ASP.NET, MSSQL, MSAccess, or ASP, then you can prefer Windows hosting plans. When you prefer for hosting services, you have to decide either you want basic windows hosting or advanced windows hosting. If it is LINUX hosting, ensure you want basic package or advanced hosting package. If you get a featured and flexible web hosting service, then you can make a successful launch of your website online. Right from basic website to any difficult programming sites, web hosting will feature its excellent service with high end hosting solutions.

I think you are over thinking things, you shouldn't have any problems with a linux host, and in most cases, linux is easier than windows.

I suppose if you won't be lazy to do something, I suppose you'll manage to do everything you need.

Skills are gained with the experience... If someone wants to do something he will manage to do it only making efforts...
OP, You should start doing something and then ask about the certaing things...

There isn't anything special you need to do with a Linux based web host, they tend to be far more reliable and have higher uptimes. As far as cPanel is concerned, it is the most user friendly control panel there is.

CPanel is the best control panel for running your web site. That's fact is well-known and the companies (HostGator.com, Ahosting.biz, etc.) usually offer this one for their clients.

Please point to authority sources stating that and proving it with facts. Just because cPanel is very popular in a certain area of the hosting market, doesn't mean it's "the best". As for user friendliness, it's very much a matter of taste.

Here everything is very relative. The main authority for person who looks for or suggests a company is him(her)self and their experience. People recommend something they have good exp with or what seemed to be good for them.
No facts, just a suggestion...

Well for an PHP hosting website it's better to go with the linux hosting .Which is comparitively cheap then the windows hosting for an pho website. Even, you can have more security in linux then windows this is an advantage of having linux. Most of the severs run on linux today.
