My host has told me that my account is causing high CPU usage ("you are actually the top use CPU/memory wise on the server") and may need a VPS account. Now, my agreed account has 60GB bandwidth and having only used 37GB I am struggling to understand why I may require a VPS? Something i cant really afford.

I was told it was because vBulletin has a high CPU usage "vbulletin is a fairly CPU hungry script partly due to its heavy database usage"

Is there anyway I can reduce CPU usage?
Is my host being a bit unfair?

Any feedback greatly appreciated

For me, yes he is.
Your a victim of what is called overselling.

They host more peoples than they should, expecting them not to use the whole package they have buyed.

I where you I would try to find another host.
what is your monthly budget ?

The problem now though is moving the forum over. I would assume its a fair amount of hassle.

I currently pay $8 for 60GB bandwidth and 500mb space.

Currently looking at EasyCGI.com

It can be seen that your band width requirement increasing gradually. It seems you need to expand your package any way. You may not be able to go with your current hosting plan not long.

How big is your database?

Seems to me for that price and those specs you are with an overselling host. I would look for a host that has eAccelerator or something similar installed. Vbulletin can use a lot of resources but it depends to on server specs and setup. Do you know the specs of the server your on? (Processor/RAM) Make sure you read closely the TOS of any host you look at as many list CPU usage in it.

I would consider looking for a shared host with more ram. 1 GB isn't alot for forums. Maybe one with a Quad Core too.

how much space do you need? Definitely stay away from oversellers. A good site to research host would be www.webhostingtalk.com

Space isn't really an issue. 500mb would easily suffice.

Thanks for the link.

If 500mb is enough there is no way your database should cause an issue. Sounds like you simply need a host with a better server.

You should easily find a host that will suit your needs with your budget, just keep in mind to ask CPU limits and server specs.

Thanks again for the help.

Any suggestions on what kind of CPU limit/server spec I should ideally be looking for?

Like 5% or more I would guess.... I would ask your current host how much you were using.. some put the limit at 1%

When it comes to hosting, go for the time tested and trusted brands in the hosting business like MMhosting.com. It offers the Virtual Hosting packages that will satisfy your needs. Besides, it will give your web site reliability and stability it deserves.

Let me guess: You use Bluehost/Hostmonster? Or TheHosted? Or 1&1?

These companies are telling you to upgrade because they need your money! There are only 59 other sites with you are hosted on this server.

Migrate to something smaller and more reliable in terms of resourses usage.

Large hosts sometimes (or even often) make clients complain.

I never once told him to upgrade! I told him to find a shared host that doesn't oversell and has a better server

I think that if that is due to the CPU usage - he will unhappy on any shared account. In this case something dedicated needed VPS or dedicated server.
