I need to learn more about hosting (along with everything else I am trying to pick up )

I tried setting up an addon domain with a new domain I bought about a month ago, my host set everything up when I bought it but I decided to leave off for a bit until I had built the new site and learnt how to use addon domains myself. I tried to set it up this morning and got an error message as follows:

Quote:
Error from park wrapper: domainame.com is owned by another user.
I am on a shared hosting package. I cold do with knowing what this means exaxtly as I am a little confused.

I could also do with someone pointing me to somewhere I can learn about
.pearrc so I can figure out what all this means.
Code:

#PEAR_Config 0.9
a:11:{s:10:"__channels";a:2:{s:12:"pecl.php.net";a:0:{}s:5:"__uri";a:0:{}}s:9:"cache_dir";s:29:"/home/finan1A1/tmp/pear/cache";s:8:"data_dir";s:23:"/home/finan1A1/php/data";s:7:"ext_dir";s:22:"/home/finan1A1/php/ext";s:7:"php_dir";s:18:"/home/finan1A1/php";s:7:"php_ini";s:22:"/usr/local/lib/php.ini";s:7:"bin_dir";s:18:"/home/finan1A1/bin";s:12:"download_dir";s:29:"/home/finan1A1/tmp/pear/cache";s:8:"temp_dir";s:23:"/home/finan1A1/tmp/pear";s:8:"test_dir";s:24:"/home/finan1A1/php/tests";s:7:"doc_dir";s:23:"/home/finan1A1/php/docs";}
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

So you are domain name owner or not?

Yes I own the domain.

I should have been a little more descriptive. The domain (top level domain) I have owned for about 3 years, its the one that cpanel is saying is owned by another user that I bought a month ago (it shows on WHOIS etc as being mine which is why I am a little confused).
Its only when I try to set up the domain as an addon that cpanel shows the error (the error only shows in cpanel) so does this mean someone on same shared host has plugged the domain as theirs in their cpanel or something?

It means that:
a) Someone else on the server is using your domain. The host could've screwed up while adding the domain to your "account" the first time. This, however, is very unlikely.

b) The Host added the domain to your account the first time, and then deleted it because you later changed your mind. cPanel however is very tricky with such things, and often leaves records of old settings.

For example, sometimes it won't let you delete certain subdomains, even after you manually clicked the "remove" button. Although it tells you that the "subdomain has been rmeoved", it still shows up on your list of subdomains. What's really happening is that although you've removed it from your account, a record for it still exists on the actual server. The same thing may be happening here, but in reverse. Your add-on domain could have a record on the server, but cpanel is telling you that you have no new add-on domains.

Not using, just add to the account. possibly by mistake. Ask your web host to check which account have this domain name.

Thanks SiberForum, I have asked who is using the name (domain) and they said they will get back to me later today but I dont see how someone could add the doman by mistake as its quite a unique domain name, I also can't imagine why anyone would use the domain as an addon if they couldn't host anything on it (the actual domain name is hosted somewhere else).

Andrei, sounds a reasonable explination thanks.

Again - thanks for the comments.
