PRECISELY!! not one of them will actually tell you the truth!
They will all tell you the answers you want to hear.
We have been hosting on our own co-located servers or managed dedicated servers for several years, currently we have 3 servers with around 200 clients and 600+ websites and you won't find a single mention of us on any "review" site. We have had clients leave us for a "better" deal, only to return a few months later when the promised service doesn't actually materialise.
Clients know they can ring us up and speak to a REAL person from around 7 am until 11 pm (GMT) and there will be somebody around during the weekend . If they are up and about at 3am they can always leave a message and it will be dealt with. And just about EVERY "problem" is something to do with the clients own machine or their ISP.
We currently have had 100% uptime over the last 6 months but it will only take 8 hours of something that is outside our control to bring that down to ~99%. So we make no promises of uptime other than breakdowns will be fixed as quickly as possible. We had a raid card blow up (literally) in one server on Boxing day, the server was down for 11 hours while we got to site and replaced the card, tested the server, checked the drives etc. and NOBODY noticed anything amiss.
The secret? We don't sell to numpties who expect the world for $1 dollar a year, then complain because they got exactly what they paid for.
