Hi

Is an addon domain the same as a subdomain?

The reason I am asking is I set up an addon domain and cpanel is also showing a subdomain of the same name, I tried to delete the subdomain (just to see if I could!) and it wouldn't let me, cpanel said it was linked to the addon domain and I need to delete that 1st.

So are they the same thing as far as cpanel and search engines are concerned?

Thanks in advance.

The subdomain is required for cPanel to keep track of stats, etc. Search engines will view the domain as a separate domain (as long as you never place any links to the subdomain anywhere on the net).

An addon domain allows you to host multiple sites off of one hosting account. In this case, all traffic to say, myaddon.com, would go to a subfolder like /myaddon.com/ within your main account. This does things like allow me to put my own site on my hosting plan, and give my wife her own domain with her own site without buying a second hosting plan somewhere.

What it sounds like you want is a PARKED domain. Parked domains point multiple domain names to the exact same site. So you would get traffic to myaddon.com going to the exact same site as mysite.com. Essentially an alias for mysite.com. Same site, same content, different url in the address bar.

Does that help clarify things?

*Sigh*, I'll actually try to answer your question :P. Guys, let's actually read the question before we start answering!

In short, no, they are not the same. A subdomain creates something like yahoo.google.com while an add-on domain can be google.com.

If you want to add another domain to your hosting account, like Chris explained, you are in search of an add-on domain. For example, let's say you own google.com. You want to add yahoo.com ... but want it to have different content. Then you add yahoo.com as an add-on domain. Notice how it asks you to choose a dirctory? Let's say you choose to set /yahoo/ . So, when google.com is loaded, you get your accounts "root" folder. But, when yahoo.com is laoded, you really get google.com/yahoo (that's where the content is). The URL, however, doesn't show that.

A subdomain basicly does the same thing, but with a different URL. You still set a directory from which the content will be drawn, however the URL will look like this :
yahoo.google.com. So basicly, it's just a little divider.

Subdomains can be created from any existing domain, and nothing else needs to be purchased. However, in order to have an add-on domain, you'll need to purchase another domain name (assuming you don't already own one).

So:
subdomain = yahoo.google.com
add-on domain = yahoo.com

Your main domain name and subdomain on it are different domain names wherever they being hosted.

Do not move it to new account only if you are looking to improve your SEO. That will be worthless.

Thanks for the replies but maybe I should have been more specific as I thought the 1st answer was correct so maybe I should clarify...

I know the difference between an addon domain and a sub domain (or at least I thought I did) - heres the problem/question again...

I have set up an addon domain (like addondomain.com) which is fine, cpenal also set up a subdomain with the same name (which it did automatically) so it can also be viewed as addondomain.maindomain.com - which is what I don’t want.

So why is cpanel setting up a subdomain when I set up an addon domain, I dont want the addon domain to be able to be viewed as a subdomain. If I wanted a subdomain I would have set one up!

So I now have an addon domain and a subdomain when all I wanted was an addon domain.

Is this the way it should be done? Should cpanel automatically set up a subdomain when an addon domain?

Thanks again for any replies

Mine has always set it up this way. you could however probably remove the addondomain.com and addondomain A records from your main domains zone file so it will not load.

That is the way it is setup by default with cPanel and while I can't think of any real benefit to it at all that type of thing seems to go hand in hand with cPanel sometimes

But Cpanel is not only one control panel. I think that you need understand the process and be able to do it using different panels
