They probably haven't actually hijacked them, 123-reg were enom resellers as so many registrars are, but earlier in the year 123-reg (who are part of Pipex or GXNetworks as they are now called) had some DNS disasters, (fortunately our servers were out of the Pipex datacentre by then  ) and it may have been the case that enom stepped in and took over the name servers.
123-reg have always suffered from the Pipex "we're too big to care" attitude so it wouldn't have crossed their corporate mind to actually inform anyone.
