How do you guys feel about Master Reseller Packages? We've decided to give them a go, at BLD Hosting. So far so good, no sales, but no problems either - at least none while testing!
What do you guys have to say about such packages? I know that over at web hosting talk not too many approve.

A little pricey. And your 96% uptime really just kills a lot of purchases. According to your webhostingstuff.com page you have 100% uptime. I would change that 96% uptime guarantee to 99% or 99.9

Ah, maybe you've misunderstood the point of the thread. I wasn't asking for a "review" of my services - nor of my guarantees. I was just wondering what your thoughts about "Master Resellers" are in general.

I think that you need to wait little bit. Maybe run promotions on them to see if they are in demand. Here is nothing to review. You will see that yourself.

Master resellers extend the ever massive chain of web hosting. Only provide master resellers to people that are willing. Introducing master resellers could mean people asking for alpha resellers and super alpha resellers.

Yes I did that. And I said that it was pricey and that people will less likely buy them because of the uptime.

Ah, I'd never go that far! It's just ridiculous. At one point one should move on to a VPS and/or dedicated server. That can act as your "alpha master reseller".
Master resellers are already relatively close. I just decided that it'd be ideal for those whom don't want to learn how to manage a system.

Where in your post do you say anything about the idea of a master reseller itself. I DID NOT ask you to review my website, service, guarantees, or effectiveness.

They can get a managed VPS?

I agree. It's bad enough that becoming a host is so easy and cheap. Now you can pretend you're a "big" host too, and offer reseller accounts, when you're barely suited to be a reseller yourself.
From a provider's POV, I guess I can understand it though. If there's a demand, it makes sense to cater to it.

Dan is right. But to understand if there a demand yiou need at least give that a try.
First month and years are very difficult ones.

The problem is that a server can get quickly overrun with master reseller accounts on it. The server would have to be constantly monitored to make sure that it isn't becoming overpopulated and if the plans are successful, would have to constantly make server changes to isolate the bigger resellers from the pack so they don't overtake the server.

That should be not only monitored but that should be controlled as well. You need to avoid loading more then 40% of server sources.

I think as long as you do not promote or allow over selling there is nothing wrong with this, but if you have sellers over selling there accounts, it leads to a very high server load.

I'm sure that those "unlimited Master Resellers" can quickly get out of hand - but what about setting a limit on the number of resellers they can create?

With sufficiently limited disk space and data transfer, and/or overselling disabled for resellers and/or limited number of resellers, I suppose this can be managed, somewhat.
There remains the problem of the chain of support, where the end user asks the reseller asking the master reseller asking the alpha reseller asking the dedicated server admin to address an issue.
In reality though, these accounts are often sold by small type providers, come with unlimited everything and overselling enabled. A recipe for disaster.

master reseller software is a bit unstable and contains multiple security issues. there was one that even included a back door program

If you can run your hosting service efficiently and never sell any unlimited master resellers, it' Okay. In my opinion no host should oversell their hosting, nor let their resellers and master resellers oversell. You should take care of the interests of everyone, including the end users.
I had to see a company very closely scamming people by offering unlimited resellers and master resellers for a couple of bucks each. When they made enough money, they simply sold it to a somewhat big company and the rest is nothing but scammed people crying over the old and new management alike. People who follow these kind of business practices should be hanged.

The furthest I would go would be selling Master reseller accounts, alpha resellers would get out of hand very quickly
