Web-Host for a Client

Hi,

I'm currently building a Website for a small company, it's a basic HTML website, nothing fancy, contains graphics and only has like 4 pages of Content, well it's really just a Contact and About Us page to be honest. I've normally just put my Clients domain and files on my host but due to me maybe moving back to Uni, I' don't know how long I'm going to have my host so I'd like to set everything up so it's out of my hands once it's done.

I'm looking for a basic host, somthing cheap, would be best if it supplied the domain aswell but not too bothered, I've been looking around but it seems a little steap paying around £4 per month (£48 Year) for hosting on a basic website which probarly won't get that much traffic.

Regarding payment for the hosting and domain, Once I pay for it is there anyway to remove my details so that I don't get Billed again when it expires and its upto him to renew.

Regards,
LB

The best advice would be to get your client to buy their own hosting account. You upload the site for them and hand it over - that way you won't be responsible for any hosting related issues further down the line.

And £4/month is very reasonable I'd say - £48 a year plus domain is not a lot to pay for a good reliable host!

I was planning to give loyalblue a folder on my server and redirect there domain to that folder, so it "looks" like its on there own server, but its really not.

I applaud your generosity but this site is for a company, and presumably the site will be an integral part of their marketing etc.

If they have support issues who will answer them?

Depends on what the question would be, i would support the hosting side, but if they had an issue with say forums (a bug or something) i would not be able to support that.

Its just an idea, do as you wish loyalblue!

I'm sure the client would like all of the functionality that you may have. If you just give him a folder - he essentially just has FTP and the website. Sure it's enough, but what happens when they want an addon domain, a subdomain, email accounts? Surely, you won't give him access to your control Panel. No, no... They need their own!

A sub folder, with a mere addon domain would not suffice.

Hence why they would email me and i set it up. Not every new website has to go out and buy a new hosting plan, my site is for free beginning company/private websites.

Of course, that's why "Free Hosting" still exists. But this is just something else. You're limiting absolutely everything that they could do. They have to run every little thing by you - and can't do anything for themselves.

If it's free hosting that he wants - I'd go with a free web host. If he doesn't need free hosting - I'd stay away from them.

Decaf, forgive me if I'm coming of as rude - I understand that you're doing something generous - but it just won't be beneficial for him to accept such an offer. If you really want to get people hosted for free (under your own account) - simply buy a reseller. It's not much more expensive - and you'll be able to give clients their own control panel.

Ya, right now I'm working on a custom content managment system that will allow users to create there own folder which they can "access" by a CP (Control Panel) or FTP.

That is good idea so far butt I would recommend you to integrate existing control panel there. That should help you and might save some time and sources

Decaf thank you very much for the Generous offer but I'd really like to give the Client full functional hosting, At the end of the day it's not my company, I'm not paying for the Hosting and I only want whats best for the Client.

I was gonna ask the guy to Buy the Hosting and I'll set everything up but I remember him saying He doesn't have a Debt / Credit Card so that wouldn't work, unless there is others methods for Payments. First thought was we decided that I would buy the Hosting for him but then after I thought about it and As I've said I don't want Billied ever year for it.

However thinking about this more while replying, I do have my own Server with my website but I don't know how long I'm gonna Run the Server for, the Website may fail in the next year and I'd have to get the companies all up and running again. Put If I take money for the hosting the Server will pay itself and I' won't need to Gave it up..... The reason I was gonna get the Client there own Web-Server is so that It's off my plate, I've done the Job and it's handed over left for them. Although it's the same thing as Decaf is offering me, It would just be a Folder within my space and they would have to request 'things'.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Does he have a bank account. He could use paypal to pay for his hosting.
