Is HostGator a Good Choice? Do YOU Use It?

I've used several hosts and finally switched over to HG about 7 months ago. I'm thrilled with them. I have 5 websites online right now, average over 20,000 hits per month (on one alone) and have had literally 0 problems. I recommend them to everyone. GL finding a host that fits your needs!

They limit you on everything, and purposely exclude the hosting of space-intensive operations.

If you're actually planning on using a lot of disk space - it would be wise to NOT go with an unlimited plan - simply because they don't like it when you actually use your "unlimited" space. I'm sure they'll kick you off the server, just to keep 20 other clients happy.

A host that is overselling won't actually let you draw close to what you purchased. Because, well, they are overselling - and simply can't handle it.
Maybe hosts get too hard a time about this. Consider "Unlimited" to mean "no hard limit". It is a sales gimmick but it is a legitimate approach to selling as well. No hard limit on your resource usage, but if your site starts pulling down seriously on the performance of other share users, you need to get your own server or server share. They should call it that rather than Unlimited, but people are automatons who respond positively to words like "unlimited" or "free".

Without overselling, hosting would cost a lot more. Computer racks would spend most of their time underloaded and burning through electrical power for nothing. Overselling is in pursuit of efficiency. It is abused by struggling hosting outfits of course.

I have 4 sites hosted on hostgator, I haven't had 1 problem since I have been a member. I think there excellent.

If your thinking of signing up , why don;t you try it for a month for free, just use a coupon code of my website, this way you can use it for a month and if you have problems you can cancel, So your not loosing anything in the end.

Hope this help's.

I use Hostgator here in Brazil and I'm happy with it.

The bad part is that they don't accept u to publish direct links - like *.mp3.

but streaming is allowed!

I have generally had good experiences with Host Gator. One thing that really upset me a year or so ago was when they changed everyone's password without telling them. Actually, they did email my gmail account but it was flagged and sent to spam -- gmail thought it a phishing attempt. Anyhow, that debacle sucked.

Generally uptime has been good, tech support so-so...for sure be aware of the 25 simultaneous connection limit if you're planning on doing a forum on shared hosting -- that is a killer.

edit: the reason for the password change was some kind of security breach they had, which was not reassuring at all...but knock on wood i haven't heard of anyone getting hacked as a result

It was not a breach per se, but there were several causes for a higher than acceptable risk:

Thanks for the clarification and link -- I should have chosen my words more carefully!

I used it for a very little while. I didn't stop using them because I would have been unhappy with them, I just gave up on my project. If I was to start something I'd choose Hostgator again.
