I have a simple proof of concept project that needs a Windows Server which will connect to a third party server via a tunnel.

My preferred *nix host can only support this with a dedicated server and they are not a windows shop.

I will need this VPS for 3 or 4 months. Then we will scale up to a production version with redundant servers and an additional server for front end and admin.

The initial development can be done on a lightweight server and a VPS would be more than adequate for the processing requirements. I suppose that even a shared host might do, but I doubt that any provider would be willing to support the tunnel requirement on a shared host even if it is possible.

I am not a networking guy (if you are, talk to me) and my question is as follows:

Is the only solution to this a dedicated server or can a Windows VPS be configured to support a tunnel?

Any one out there that can give me a heads up on this?

Also, there seem to be very few providers that offer Windows VPS solutions? Any recommendations _from_personal_experience_ would be welcome.

Probably not. However, I would prefer having admin rights. As I said in my previous post:

Doing own research you will have small least of the web hosting providers.
I suppose that will be the best for you to discuss that with them.

You'd rater continue your search for the VPS server.
Somewhere on godaddy (yes they do it and they have tons of the discounts - do search) or on the hostingsource.com (not so much but about discounts but 50%Discount couponshould still be working).
I assume that in the this "discounted" time you will be able to have VPS at the same price range as VPS.

No, still talking to them about the VPN. Also still looking at other vendors. If I decide to use them I'll provide some feedback here about the code.

Follow up - my VPS with hostingsource.com is up and running. They didn't blink at the VPN requirement and put a lot of effort in the pre sales process. They had this up and running in a couple of hours. Other providers said minimum requirement for a VPN was a dedicated server. So far so good.
