How can i host a website at home ?

Yes you can. But home PC was not designed for that. But you can. Why are you asking?

I am really interested in it and how it works i would like to know more about it

You could try something like "Wamp" that comes with Apache, SQL etc...

http://www.diywebserver.com and their forum may turn out to be good reads, though they're under an updating process it seems.

You'll either need a static IP address or use a dynamic DNS service like ChangeIP or DynDNS.
A dynamic DNS service sets the dns cache expire time to be very short. So, if your IP changes, they can update the routing.

A home PC can work fine as a server. Google's search cluster is built from cheap commodity PCs. The biggest issue hosting from home is, bandwidth. Most broadband ISP's severely cap the upload limit.

I ran my site from my living room for the first 2 years it was up. I picked up hosting when I moved.

I highly recommend that you use linux if you're going to run a server. Security issues with windows can be a nightmare.

There are no security issues with windows itself...

Hassle free hosting at home or at professional level is done on linux servers... I remember that windows updates were fetched from a linux server a while ago...

Nowadays with distro's like Ubuntu it's very easy to setup a LAMP server.

Absolutely agree to that. That is up to you what to chose to have everything secured.

Itself yes but as rule all secure kit is included by default. That is very important to check before start as that is not being promoted

yes completely agree with you.

Would have to agree with others on this one, do not recommend hosting at home.

My assumption Is that you probably need a Cheap(May be second hand) server.
Try powering the server from your Home,but always keep sure that the place where your server is located is adequately Cool.
The Cooler the Environment The Better the Odds of Server malfunction not Happening.
