In most cases your provider will be responsible for this, and in some cases you will have the ability to set this via their control panel. You should contact their support team and ask how to set a reverse DNS (PTR) record for your IP address.
You will provide them with a domain (e.g. your server hostname) to set in this record. Then if you do a lookup (e.g. nslookup) on the IP address it should return the server hostname as the result.
Many mail servers check for this as part of an anti-spam process. (i.e. if you don't have rDNS configured they treat it as spam and may block/filter it more aggressively).
