Setting up VPS hosting?

I'm putting together a new server and all of the resources arn't going to be used for probably 6 months to a year. I was looking to setup some VPS hosting for some friends that want access.

The Specs on the server will be dual socket Core i7 940 (2.93GHz), 48GB DDR3, and some hard drives (not sure yet).

How would I setup VPS hosting. I will probably use Cpanel. I have used VMware before and I know how to limit RAM and H/D space (when you create the VM) but how can you limit the CPU usage?

Thanks.

I would recommend you use vitruazo. That seems to be recommended and easy to use. Probably then you will move to another maybe custom solution

Install HyperVM and OpenVZ virtualization (both of which are free). Depending on what you want, you can choose to use XEN instead of OpenVZ.

VPS is the only thing practical on this machine. It is pointless to try to compete with any of the shared hosting companies. We will be able to run quite a few VPS clients on this machine and since its dual socket Core i7 wtih DDR3, it will be plenty fast.

He is not looking for the VPS. Please reread the OP carefully

The owner of HyperVM has committed suicide, and his company - Lxlabs is left with no real management. HyperVM has been exploited and ripped apart by the hacker community. Exploits are now available to the public. Please disregard the post I made earlier reccomending this software.

Using HyperVM is no longer safe, and this project will probably be discontinued.

Yeap. But we are lucky as have alternative to that. At the same time I believe some huge measures will be taken

I would personally go for software based virtualization that Virtuozzo offers. Plus Plesk is best integrated with it since both are from the same vendor.

Using openvz by itself could prove to be an alternative in its own. A control panel is not really needed. Alternatives will soon arise. One just needs to wait.

Hi There,

I've recently set up a VPS with the idea being to host 20 - 50 minisites for one company, each with a different URL. I've managed to set up a number of sites, which are working very well, but have a bit of an issue. When you visit www.domain.co.uk, the site I have set is there and so on with www.domain2.co.uk , www.domain3.co.uk etc, but if you visit http://domain.co.uk, http://domain2.co.uk and so on, the same web content appears?

I want the content at www.domain.co.uk to appear at http://domain.co.uk and so on. Can anyone help with this?
