VPS is where the server hardware is partitioned in virtual machines (4 or 6 usually) and an OS is installed on each segment and each VM can be leased/sold to a different client.

A dedicated server is where the hardware is exclusive to one hosting account/client

VPS gives you more power than a shared hosting account but dedicated servers are the best but they cost too much, especially if you don`t own a website with 10.000+ visitors.

Sadly, but it's not 100% true. Don't forget that VPS uses its CPU/memory to load operating system (not just to handle the traffic), so if VPS is low on memory, it will work slower than shared account on good server.

i got a cheap 350 gb bandwidth ,256mb vps

its been good to me for 1 month no complaints, soon it will expire now im going to look into a unmetered vps, i don't see any point in dedicated servers, cloud vps are fast. the only down side with a vps, is the memory really bandwidth is always provided in large amounts but not memory ! a good vps should give you at least 512mb or 1 GB, in my 256mb i run mencoder and ffmpeg to encode on my vps, it killed apache2 and made things pretty slow. needed to reboot every 15 mints. so you get the idea, more memory is always good on a vps.

forgot to add that almost all VPS servers are shared on a 100mibt, so you will probably get around 4 to 7 mbit up/down

that could be another down side to it

cheap vps speeds, i really had no complaints

barebone VPS - apache2 running and few other things

A shared web hosting service or virtual hosting service (VPS) or derive host refers to a web hosting service where many websites reside on one web server connected to the Internet. Each site "sits" on its own partition, or section/place on the server to keep it separate from other sites. This is generally the most economical option for hosting, as many people share the overall cost of server maintenance.

A dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of Internet hosting in which the client leases an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including choice of operating system, hardware, etc. Server administration can usually be provided by the hosting company as an add-on service. In some cases a dedicated server can offer less overhead and a larger return on investment.

Now its depend upon your requirements what you need and what you want.
If you can afford dedicated hosting then its best among all but if you cant then i suggest you to try shopaserver.com . There support is awesome and price is excellent, just $2.5 a month.

Vps you share resources like you can have 3-4 people on one box, a dedicated server is all yours.

VPS is a virtual dedicated server. But VPS has limited resources (CPU power, memory, hdd space).
