What is the different between unlimited and unmetered notions?
Can bandwidth and webspace be only unmetered (have seen that in removed)?
I ask as I am confused a bit in that.

Of course hosting metrics can be "unmetered" but they won't be "unlimited"

I think that is up to you to believe that or not believe and use or not to use. I'm sure that is marketing gimmick.

In every unlimited hosting there will be some hidden limits such as RAM/CPU usage. So you can only use a limited resource in unlimited hosting also. Yes to a greater extend a marketing gimmick.

I think you should remember that for web hosting provider that might be a problem to give as much space as you need and provide as much bandwidth as you need. But that could be a problem with server load.

yup sure there is nothing as unlimited..but i guess by some companies what i meant that unlimited shows to us that user can use as many as web space that a server can afford. thats why the amount dosent comes on the screen..but no one can use very large files..

Well there are also some companies which really do provide unlimited which is not actually unlimited as we know nothing is unlimited..what they mean that much space that we cant really use all of it.. but i guess those unlimited packages come with high cost..

Now almost all web hosts are using "Unlimited Space". It's another bull, because they limit your usage by number of inodes, even Cpanel back is limited to just one!

Other limitations like no streaming, no videos hosting, no music files, blah blah...

Unlimited? They are not gonna let you do that!

There is nothing unlimited in web hosting firm. Bandwidth has it's own physical limitation so be aware of false advertisement.

Unlimited is hard to imagine that for $5-$10 per month, maybe even less they would allow one to use whatever they wanted. Unmetered bandwidth for that same low price is hard to imagine too. If it was unmetered then they should be willing to say more like 1mbps, 10mpbs, 100mpbs unmetered or something. Unmetered in general is a little vague. I think they just do it because the average or new customer will think it sounds better than another company that puts a number on it.

"Unlimited" in the hosting industry is a sales gimmick. Just like other industries have their gimmicks, such as car sales centers saying "We can finance anyone". They obviously cannot finance everyone.

We offer unlimited hosting services because we don't want to have to set limits for our customers. It's not about trying to offer something we can't provide.

If a customers site is using too many resources and affecting other customers on a server, we will move the account to a less used server. But if the customers site is consuming all the servers resources, we'll recommend the customer acquire a VPS or dedicated server.

It's common sense really. A shared hosting environment is just that, shared. If you know your website is consuming enough resources that it requires a VPS or dedicated server, why would you even consider a shared host?

Nothing is unlimited and nothing is unmetered. Basically, it is the same thing, only different wording. Both are marketing gimmicks. Your best bet would be to go with a host that does not OverSell, as that creates downtime and super slow downloads.

exactly! even so famour hostgator unlimited hosting is showing how many resources you can use (250k nodes)
and TOS have a great list of forbidden resorces eating scripts (Topsites
IRC Scripts/Bots
Proxy Scripts/Anonymizers)

Unlimited hosting is vague. If you read the fine prints of the terms and condition you will find that many unlimited web hosts actually limit you on other things such as amount of files, size of each file, number of backups etc.. so you will never actually have unlimited space usage.

Is the internet consumer so foolish to think that he can get something for nothing. I have yet to find anything in life that is truly free.

What I would like to see more than anything is some host to come out with usage guidelines for peoples sites according to popular scripts and visitor counts. This way people would have a good idea of what amount of usage their sites would have and then that host could sell the site owner the space and bandwidth they need.

I suppose that is everything about marketing tricks...

Unlimited is a lie.

Unmetered simply means it is not monitored, eventually there will obviously be a barrier at which you can't push any more bandwidth, use any more CPU or disk space etc, but that's why it's unmetered.
