Looking for paid hosting

I have a directory script and I want to make a site for it. I think I need MYSQL or something like that so I can upload the script to the site? I'm not positive. Correct me if I'm wrong. But I am looking for something fairly cheap and something that allows my own ads. Anyone know of some good hosting with what im looking for?

The script probably stores the data in a database, which is likely to be required to be MySQL. You should check this with the developer though (most have this info listed in the requirements, on their site).
To upload the script to your web space (your web host's server) you need to use an FTP client (Filezilla is free and works on Windows and Linux too). Your host will give you the username and password to use to login.

Can you please tell us more about your scripts? How many databases will you need?
Will it be new setup?

I suggest you use Hostgator...I have been using them for almost 2 years and I did not have any problems...
The support is perfect..site loading fast..and in some months there is 100% uptime
Also, you can pay monthly

My own experience with Hostgator is quite similar (been using them 6 years or so now). This is the uptime monitoring of the last 8 months or so: http://www.pingdom.com/reports/xdibi...ame=Hostgator1

Their servers don't seem to be running on a 100mbs connection. Shouldn't be faster than most hosts.

I recommend when looking for a host that you ask their support if the script is allowed. Most hosts do have restrictions on what scripts are allowed on their shared servers. I just found a page from HostGators site that shows you exactly what is allowed on their hosting accounts. I recommend you find out the name of the script you are using and then check this page:

How can you tell that from the link I gave above? It only provides some uptime records, not to backing the speed statement. In any case, even if they wouldn't be using 100MB connections for their servers, it's largely irrelevant for website speed assessment purposes because
1. data transfer speed is typically lower on the visitors side than on the host's side anyway
2. distance will influence maximum throughput over a single TCP/IP connection, so if you're in Europe and downloading content from the US, it will be slower.
3. network speed can be great, but if the server is slow as molasses (seen it at godaddy, fatcow etc.) it won't matter anyway. Which was my point. Scripts that take 1.5 - 3 seconds to run at some hosts take 0.3-0.4 seconds to run at Hostgator.

I didn't use your uptime report to determine their network speed. Have a look:
Code:
--2010-03-13 14:22:18-- http://www.hostgator.com/testfile.zip
Resolving www.hostgator.com... 74.53.87.195, 74.54.219.185, 67.19.71.22, ...
Connecting to www.hostgator.com|74.53.87.195|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 20971520 (20M) [application/zip]
Saving to: `testfile.zip.7'
100%[======================================>] 20,971,520 6.71M/s in 3.0s
2010-03-13 14:22:21 (6.71 MB/s) - `testfile.zip.7' saved [20971520/20971520]
Most hosts would hit about 10M/s. In terms of your uptime report, I see that it provides the response times for each check. I'm not very familiar with pingdom, however the figures on your report don't seem to indicate a quick response at all. Moreover, they're not isolated to one location only. From what I gather, pingdom response times are an average of multiple geographical locations.
To respond to a few of your statements:
1. You're correct. However, some customers require a few server to server connections. In this case, slower speeds would be limiting their connection rate.
2. The slower the original rate, the worse it'll be - in terms of distance. As you mentioned, most website visitors won't have an internet connection anywhere near the network speed of the server. A larger network speed can account for the lower connection rate.

In any way you will have different connection speed around the world. For cheap rates that will be impossible to find the solution which will work fast around the world

HostGator - for 4.99USD/month you get a lot of stuff, I recently switched from Godaddy and it's a huge difference.
Setting up a mysql database is nothing to be worried about, it's a matter of minutes.

This is not a ping based check, so one can't really assume anything about the numbers. Besides, I'm not using those figures to judge a host's performance. As I said, the link provides uptime data, and not much more beyond that.
Even if it were ping based, given that the checks could in theory be primarily or half based in say Europe, the figures would be quite skewed. Without knowing the exact percentage of checks location (which I don't know either), any judgment on the speed of responses would be inherently flawed.

Yes, hostgator for me too. I run a bunch of mysql database sites off their $10/mo unlimited domain plan.

Think happy-hosting company meets the needs of the OP.
This company provides cheap and resourceful services (Linux and Windows), support is active and helpful.

Their own web site or your web site hosted with them? I think they are hosted on 2 different servers and that can be the reason of what you see.
