I have a client that's transferring over from Godaddy's web hosting. I said that I would transfer his files over. The problem is that they don't seem to have any conventional backup system. I have tried logging in via SSH and tarring the filies - however the process is always terminated after some time - never enough to actually package all the files. I have also tried executing a shell script to package the files. Again, I find the the package is never complete.

I did manage getting all of the mysql DB's transferred over - however the files are really causing me a headache. What else can be done?

There's always FTP.

You could also try to use the archive function in the File Manager. I'm not sure if it doesn't have a limit (files or size), but you could still do it in a few steps (assuming this is not a huge account).

I think the FTP packaging would still probably be terminated. I might just have to FTP across the two servers.

If you contacted there support and explained the situation, they might give you a full backup. It's a long shot obviously, but it worth a shot. You also FTP as stated above. But that too would most likely be terminated.

I have contacted support on numerous occasions. They have always responded with the same canned jargon. They tell me about a backup feature that basically copies the files into another directory on their servers - without packaging it of course. I'll try the FTP option.

I guess I don't understand why the FTP'ing of files would terminate. Is the site so large that it's taking hours to get everything off GD? I'd hate to think it was just GD's way to making it a pain to leave them...

FTP seems to be working fine. I've been transferring files via an FTP session I created from our server to theirs for hours. It's just that when I was trying to package and compress the files - the process would always terminate. It probably has more to do with the resources the actual process was utilizing rather than GD making it tough for us. However, they really don't support any conventional way to transfer out. Thar or I'm totally missing it.

Hopefully the transfer is done over night .

I've been transferring for almost two days, and I'm not even close to finishing. Support has been no help, and I've been basically transferring each file one-by-one. First I isolated the files that were actually needed for the website to function - and I gave those transfers more priority. Now I'm just finishing up the transfer for some nonsense on the account.

It's not that they were refusing, it's more that they had no workable solution. I finally finished transferring over the last of the files a day or two ago.

As long as the account has ~1 GB of Data, you'll be able to package the files. My client was using about 5 GB of his web space, and the tar process kept terminating. Hopefully I'll never have to do this again. However, realistically, I probably will.
