Green Web hosting entails a revolutionary technology which involves trees, wind power, and renewable energy. There are a multitude of companies proudly taking on the Eco-friendly technology and promoting clean renewable methods of powering their data centers.

*The web hosts use alternative and/ or renewable energy to power their datacenters. This alternative energy generally involves trees, wind power and other renewable energies.
*They plant trees for every server sold and even telecommute to save gas. This is done to combat the effect that the functioning of a web hosting company has on the environment.
*The web hosts are devoting a lot of time, money and other resources into helping the environment stay cleaner and greener.

I'm sure green hosting is marketing gimmick. Nothing else.

Isn't there already a "Green Hosting" thread? And yes it is all a marketing gimmick I think. They charge you more when in reality they probably don't even practice "green" business. That is why I just go with my current host. No need for "green" marketing schemes to get me hooked.

All of the green hosts should look into giving more quality service at a lower cost rather than taking more money for nothing.

It's not a marketing gimmick. Look: hosting.

Nice paste job...Nile...

How would you know if a host is green without seeing their facilities and infrastructure?
Just because they say so?

Some people do believe in green power. And I suppose such web hosts were created to satisfy that demand.

Yes, its a cool concept, same concept are used while building data centers as well. As looking at the current state of Earth, I think every industry should use such concepts to preserve the environment.

You'd probably see them in the back of the facility count your green cash they just conned out of you.

All jokes aside, green hosting just isn't worth it to pay extra for. Web hosts aren't out there cutting down trees or burning forests or dumping oil in the ocean for months. (Ahem BP?)

I really highly doubt my web host is pouring extra oil into lakes and rivers.

I don't think green web hosting is a special product designed for special users.
Most quality hosting plans have the similar features of green web hosting!

I do not think that most people even think about that...
They are interested in good service and reasonable prices...

Unless there are some that use wind or solar power....

Like cantletugo posted ...hosts are not polluters.....

Wind power and related sources of energy needs to be supported than doubted upon. If we continue thinking in this kind of way, what else is left for the new generations to come? How are existing industries going to switch or adopt these methods if we're bashing the out the new ones that pioneers such earth-friendly methodologies? Don't you think that if providers utilizing green power are patronized, it will create competition in the market therefore most of them will switch to these practices so they can compete, thus resulting to greener technology advocacies?

It is ok when any web hosting compan6y support this kind of power supply. But there is another thing when it is constantly used for marketing goals. In that case that is completelly different situation about that.

Exactly. Just saying "Oh we are green and we have green business practices" just doesn't cut it anymore these days. Sadly, no one believes anyone or takes their word in comfort.

If these "green" hosts want to be taken seriously, they need to give the clients something tangible to look at and make them see the "green" factor. Being the marketing genius I am, here is my proposal:

A green host should plant a tree/plant and put an "eco-friendly" tag on it with the client or business's name if the business or client decides to buy/choose the green alternative hosting. - The green host should just plant the tree and tag it. Then take a photo and send it off to the client/business.

That is the tangible stuff they need. They can't just be going around saying "we are green and that is good enough."

Yes that is what it is, a gimmick, if people really want to save the planet stop driving your car don't go to a green web host, that's not going to do anything.
