We are currently on a linux server and having email problems where it takes about 45 minutes to receive email. Server support gave us this but it a little over my head. If any can help with suggestion. Thanks

Thank you for contacting Server Support. I understand you are having problems with your e-mail being received slow. After reviewing your server it appears that your server may be overwhelmed with e-mails coming into your server. I've been watching your server for a couple of hours and found that the inbound queue sits close to ~600 e-mails non-stop. This could be causing the issue you are experiencing.

I sent a test message from an external source to a test e-mail account I created on your server. This took 45 minutes to arrive. Looking at the headers for that e-mail show the e-mail hit your server with-in seconds of being sent.

The issue is once the message is on your server it is taking your server 45 minutes to sort through the e-mail and put it in the correct inbox. This could be caused by the high queue as stated above.

Basically it means your server isn't powerful enough to handle the volume of mail reaching the MTA.

It seems you under attack of unwanted emails. I believe that would be better to try to solve that with your web hosting provider.

That would be my guess as well. This unwanted excess of email is what is flooding the servers which can't handle the volume as chris stated.

I highly doubt increasing the server specifications will fix the issue outright as more email will use those specs and keep the flooding. You have to fix the excess email issue first.

I have recently seen this issue on a Plesk server I manage. From the headers this looks like a Plesk box as well? If so, update everything to the latest versions, and Qmail, spamassassin. Then under your Plesk admin >> Settings >> Mail Server Settings, make sure that "Switch on spam protection based on DNS blackhole lists" is checked. And in the "DNS zones for DNSBL service", add "DNS zones for DNSBL service".
