Anyone have a guess of when web hosting control will start finding its way into the advanced phones of today? I have two phones, one for work and one for personal use and I'd love to be able to manage my sites via CPanel on both.

Perhaps the solution is "apps" like the iPhone and Android phones? I have an iPhone and a Droid and I am on a frantic search for apps that allow me to manage my sites.

I know there are desktop remote apps but it isn't just the same.
I e-mailed my host just right now and I should be getting a reply very soon!

It has already slowly started to make its way to mobile devices - there are several providers that have mobile apps to manage hosting accounts

Yeah, I have seen a few hosting providers that have mobile apps now for managing accounts. Even some dedicate providers have mobile apps for account management.

I have also noticed that many hosts are starting to make their own control panel apps. These can see allot of people using their phones to make changes to their sites other than editing the code etc. I think a laptop/desktop computer will always be used for creating/editing websites.

Only time will tell but it's very exciting

Regards,
Jack

Well sure apps on cell phones might be a little bit more cumbersome but the innovation is what I like. I highly doubt I'll ever do intense editing via my iPhone but what if the app for the iPhone was made compatible with the bigger iPad?

The possibilities are pretty much endless there from what I can see.

Oh by the way, I downloaded some Android applications of their "Market" and most were FTP clients and they all worked great with my host/server. I think it is a huge step forward in this type of industry.

Also wanted to add the FTP client that worked best on the Android platform was SwiFTP. It's free and it worked pretty flawlessly. I uploaded a movie clip to my VPS and the upload speed was very good considering I was on a 3G wireless network.

Now all I think we need is a strong CPanel to do some damage with.

From my experience Filezilla is one of the most used one. I have seen a lot of our customers using that.

I believe a lot of web hosts offer a lot of custom solutions for that. You just need to do your best to find them.

Since Apple is huge right now I am wondering if maybe someone will develop something and have web host support for FTP or CPanel via an iPad?

I bet some developing and designing or even tweeking on an iPad would be a JOY.

You see people using Filezilla on their Android phones or iPhones? It isn't even out or Filezilla developers haven't ported it to the mobile platforms.

Really hoping they do soon though.

No, I did not mean mobile markets at all.
But I hope soon they will occupy mobile market as well.

I think many hosts including the ones I use have the technology in place to support the mobile markets but I think there is a lack of power on the phones and of course the networks the phones use.

Many developers need to step up their game if they want to get their apps out there I think.

There are a few code editors/ftp clients for the iPad. None seemed quite there yet, but they do exist and I assume will get better. Do a search for either "code editors" or "ftp" I think that's how I found them. Think they were listed under productivity in the app store.

As for cPanel you could always use your browser. We all forget about those and head straight for the apps, but if it's online your browser will work. I would guess over time more hosts will create apps, but I bet most don't unless they have to in order to keep up with the competition.

Have you by any chance seen any compatibility issues with using the iPad Safari browser with CPanel? I always feel like there are some links that don't work or some things that don't show properly on mobile devices with CPanel.

A lot of websites these days are pouring significant amounts of money into mobile site development. Truth is, not every website actually needs this, and not every company has the finances to hire a mobile developer. If you sell a specific product or have accessibility issues on mobile devices, it may be time to develop a mobile specific site.

Very true maybe 2-3 years ago but now with everyone using iPads or iPhones or even Android phones with internet, people are using the mobile sites a lot more.

I personally am thinking of optimizing my site for the mobile web very soon.

I can't say as I've really spend much time using cPanel on the iPad. I'm still generally doing development work on my Mac. I would think most links should work. Where you might have issues is if the link requires javascript to work or if you specifically need to see something in the hover state.

Which links weren't working?

As far as the display it's possible not everything will work quite as expected. cPanel probably wasn't designed with mobile devices in general in mind. I doubt they've redesigned things for the iPad. The display should work as expected in general, but it wouldn't surprise me if a few things were off due to the way cPanel was designed.
