Everyone must have used a free hosting company sometime or the other. ( I know some of you haven't )
Whether if they were testing a few scripts or don't have enough money to purchase paid hosting.
So, what is the best free hosting company that you've used in the past? Did enjoy your time using it and were you satisfied with the hosting company?

Byethost.
I have 6 sites that have been hosted there for more than 5 years. No problems.
No forced ads or requirements, 50 addon domains, 50 subdomains, and 50 MySQL DB's
They use Vistapanel which is very similar to cPanel.
The only downfall is there is no SMTP support. This is not a problem though, as they walk you through setting up Gmail for your Email needs.
I set up a Gmail Imap account for my domains and it works just fine.

The "best" free host I have used was the one that required you to post to get hosting. So in reality it isn't really free but it didn't necessarily cost me money. The reason I think it was the "best" out of the free hosts I have used was because as long as you kept posting, you'd have pretty stable reliable hosting.
In general though, paid hosting is less stressful, less work, and even more reliable and stable. Haven't had issues with my previous shared hosting plan with my current host or even the current VPS.

I've tried it too and it looked good, but I don't really need to buy hosting so I have not tested them extensivelly

Oh god, they are still open? I remember way back when everyone made web sites with them. So funny how many ads your sites would be filled up with!
As suggested before, just go with a shared hosting plan. If you can't afford $2-$3 a month, there is something really wrong and you shouldn't really be spending your time making a web site but finding a job.
That $3 with I remember with my current host gets you a domain as well. So you are getting HUGE bang for your buck.

Only partially. The US based branch is closed. They still operate in Japan though.

And as the OP said, free hosting can be used to test scripts and etc; that is fine but, Geocities is far too underpowered and doesn't have the specific server requirements to run a lot of scripts and codes like PHP. Paid hosting does.

I can agree with that even though I compete with them. On the other hand I also have a few sites where I use their free host reseller program (if you can "resell" something that is free lol).
But yeah, their service is pretty darn good for what it is. It is stable and reliable, and pretty quick for free hosting.
On the downside, it lacks a lot of features, as it's geared to drive up-sales to their paid hosting.
Also, while they offer a large amount of space, the inode limits on accounts can be an issue.

Byethost gets another vote from me. I don't know, I use a paid host, but when I was using them I very rarely had problems, and if I did, I contacted their support team and they replied ridiculously quick.

I have used some i the past, so far they are not alive anymore. In any case I think that free web hosting company is not for the long term. Only some live for more then few years.

Yeah, you are correct.
The only free web host that I'll use is if it is very popular so I'll know that they wouldn't just quit & make me lose all of my uploaded content,
