How much are you paying for Dedicated hosting? what are you getting for your money, bandwidth, memory, ram, processor power, which provider etc.

I'm coming form a web host so my point of view is a little bit different. But I'd says that a low-end Core2Duo or i7 Core server with 1GB - 2 GB of RAM and up 1,000 GB bandwidth goes at $100. It could cost less or more depending of the company and the SLA.

I fully agree with hcolor. I think that the price depends on the server configuration and management services.

It also depends on the network the server is on, how fast the support response times are, etc.

It depends on many factors. So that is very general question in here. I'm not sure how that can be answered correctly.

It's also worth noting that cloud hosting is becoming an ever greater part of the hosting industry. There is certainly still a place for dedicated hosting but the days of comparing a price for cpu and bandwidth seem pretty short. People are more interested in uptime and scalability and that's why cloud hosting is really taking off.

A variable that hasn't been mentioned is after-sale support, it goes a long way into what are you getting for your money. A powerful server at a low monthly rate is zero value if you can't get support when you need it.

This is true. Also, if the server is managed there is certainly a price-premium

Maybe you should ask the price, having in consideration many ranks like:
0 - 100$ ( what you can get between this price )
100- 200$... and so on and on.

I'm with VPSLink for 12$/month Linux Server. Bare basics, but great for what I need.

Don't forget the difference in cost between server grade and desktop grade hardware. I know of a few providers that offer severs dirt cheap but are not reliable

Yeah, there is a BIG difference between a Dell Poweredge server and a desktop PC with the same specs. One is geared towards professional use, and designed to withstand thousands of hours of non-stop usage in an extreme environment; and is built with all top end parts. Cheap desktops on the other hand are not.

My choice for dedicated servers is site5.com. The machines they offer are Dell Poweredge enterprise grade servers hosted in The Planet datacenter, for substantially less than direct pricing.

Honestly, it's the VPS world now. Dedicated servers are too expensive and difficult to manage.

I used to have several dedicated servers but cloud is the way to go now. I'm paying just under £100 per month for a VMware virtual machine.

Dedicated servers are way too advanced for many users and are too powerful for most users. They are wasting their money when a well equipped VPS will work just fine and in many cases exceed their needs.

Virtualizing the servers is common practice now and I just see dedicated servers becoming very obsolete very soon once cloud becomes mainstream.

Of course,It depends on many factors....now I must pay for i7 Core server with 1GB every month...

I pay about £45 / Pm for :

Core2 Duo
512ram
120Gb disks
Unlimited bandwidth ( 100Meg )

My other servers go for around £2000Pmonth.. Quad xeons,
4Gb ram,
500Gb disks
1Gig uplink unlimited.

However, if you have a real strong demand site, you may have no choice but to go to a dedicated server. If so - then you have to find the best, offering fully-managed dedicated servers. Every definition differs totally successful - and when services are involved - is really what you pay for. You get a fully managed dedicated server, looking at $ 400 and not more than a month.

This thread is funny because only one person so far (lynxus) has actually answered the persons question, the rest has basically been saying it depends or they are guessing at a price.
