I didnt trust the statistical data program my webhosting site gave me for my website...I supposedly have "unlimited traffic/space".....thankfully im not mentally retarded and believe that...so I wanted to know for all you dedicated Server/VPS's how did your shared webhoster contact you and tell you...we need you off our servers your sites too big!...did they just give you 3 days notice or like a month?those who own webhosting companies could you answer as well?

I think that depends on the web hosting company how to inform their customers about that. But in any case any host warn the customer about that. Read the TOS and AUP.

You know what, some web hosts just don't tell you off. What they do is make sure your site goes down very frequently until it pisses you off to switch host. I know this sounds crazy, but that's their tactic.

Other than that, they may find a clause in their TOS to tell you off.

Btw, for VPS, I recommend Heroku, Linode and Slicehost. Am using RoR web applications on these servers and they have been fantastic.

At some point, your site will be using too much CPU/memory or other resource, that will make server slow for everybody else who's using it, or threaten that to happen. Depending on how severe the situation is, the host will either contact you to advise taking action, or they will suspend your account to save their other customers.

I never had my host complain to me about overuse. You get what you pay for and they really keep their word. I think it is up to you to know when you need to upgrade.

There is no such thing as unlimited disk space or bandwidth, it is simply impossible. Once your site gets too big and starts consuming too many resources, your host will tell you to switch hosting. For this reason, I usually advise against using "unlimited" hosting providers

Unlimited space is impossible, even virtually. Any company that offers you unlimited space and resources for a fixed cost is disingenuous at best or flat-out lying at worst.

Usually this applies on shared hosting. My several clients when they reach a certain amount of traffic, I would advise them to move to VPS/Dedicated Server. No, I am not talking about upgrading the web hosting package to VPS/Dedicated Server of the same web hosts.

I would usually suggest some web hosts that DON'T run shared hosting, but solely from VPS and above. These people are generally more technical inclined, more serious with their customer service and offers. They don't oversell like shared hosting. They don't offer "unlimited web space" nor "unlimited bandwidth". They tell you honestly how much they offer, and what happens when you get crazy traffic all of a sudden (dugg, slashdotted, techcrunch'ed). Customers can talk to them, and they are usually reasonable people and either charge you a little if your traffic becomes steadily more, or charge you nothing when it was just exceeding bandwidth for few days.

Fair huh?

Why? If someone needs shared web hosting you will recommend him VPS?

I think the unlimited resources on a shared plan is pretty true to the host. I know my host honored what they put on my account but speeds on a shared account have a threshold and that is why a VPS is recommended once you get larger.

Most people think resources is all that matters but in reality, speed plays a HUGE part in the web site/hosting experience. Just overlooked and underrated.

You are right. In any case I think that is useful to read TOS and AUP carefully and do not skip it while signing up.

Or just discuss everything with your potential web host before signing up.

For these the unlimited spaces can be available in all these there are so many things which is great to know about it. I know my host honored what they put on my account but speeds on a shared account have a threshold and that is why a VPS is recommended once you get larger.

You always sign TOS and AUP (tick that you agree). Then once someone start overuse limits on CPU or mem usage and being terminated start arguing with web host.

When any company assure that they provide Unlimited space and resources for a fixed cost then you must read TOS and AUP carefully before sign up. You don't think about upgrade your hosting plain because Your web hosting company is responsible for that (how to inform their customers about upgrade).
