I currently have around 60 sites with hostgator. Several of my sites run vbulletin forum software. Just about every month around the same time they start spewing errors out. I will come to the office in the morning and have over 200 emails from the vb sites. Most of them complaining about too many sql connections etc.

After complaining and talking and working with HG for months, they have told me that this is because I am on shared servers. Someone else on the server is running something that is loading up the sql connections causing it to hit its limit and crash.

They have offered to move me to other shared servers but note that I may have the same issue. They have also recommended that I go to a lvl 5 VPS solution which would completely remedy the situation at a cost of double what my hosting costs are now.

Is there someone out there that does either reseller hosting or vps hosting at affordable prices where I will not hit this issue? I do not want to go moving all of my sites just to find out its the same everywhere. I also do not want to pay 120 a month for hosting...

With all due respect if you're running 60 site with several vB installs you're going to eventually run into the issue with any shared hosting environment.

It seems Hostgator have given you good advice, it's time to upgrade your hosting facilities, $120 per month for hosting 60 sites is cheap!

that may be true and may be the info that I have needed. I am a web designer and have bought out a small hosting company be able to offer more options to my clients. The original solution sits on 2 HG reseller servers. Problem is there is no telling how many other sites that HG has sitting on these servers. so if I need to upgrade, I need to upgrade.

Would you go with a HG vps or someone else? Is this the way to go?

There is a 25 simultaneous connections limit that will apply to shared/end user accounts, at Hostgator. Most likely, you're hitting this limit, and the timing may have to do with a certain period when the server is a bit busier than usual (backups related maybe?), resulting in myqsl queries taking longer than usual to complete.

A VPS may be the way to go, though performance can actually be a bit less impressive compared to a well managed shared/reseller hosting environment.

I would suggest a DV from removed.

Do a Google search for some reviews maybe. I think in your case to get a package you like, you have to get a host who has a custom build option. I have a custom build package and it has everything I want to the tee so you'll want to look into that.

Greg do you keep in mind any configuration for your prospective VPS? If you can post CPU, RAM and other requirements here that would help you to find solution soon.

Why would you have 60 websites the max you most likely need is 5.

You will buy a VPS, I think at least 512M RAM.

I have been looking through reviews for a couple of days. It appears that every host has their good and bad. My concern with going with another host is transferring all of my sites over and then hitting the same issue somewhere else. If upgrading to VPS is going to fix it, why wouldnt I just do it with HG if their prices are in line

A DV from mediatemple appears to be more than most of hte other VPS solutions I have looked at with lower specs.

I do not really have an specs that I have to conform to. I pretty much need 60 gig or more with at least 600gb of bw. A level 5 vps with HG appears to do that and is right at $100 a month.

The reason I have 60 websites is because my clients pay me to host 60 websites. If I only needed 5, then I would be turning clients and therefore money away. I hope this was sarcastic or meant to be funny

ldcdc probably hit the nail on the head, it's not necessarily the number of sites but server limitations with intensive applications like forum scripts. You'll find that as some of your clients sites grow they will sometimes need to progress beyond a shared hosting environment.

I had one client not so long ago who experienced huge growth with their site and they quickly outgrew the simple shared hosting that I offer my clients. In the end we decided that changing to a VPS was going to be better for them long term. I lost their hosting business but they left me a happy customer and in turn they put some referrals my way by way of thanks for my help.

As your hosting "empire" expands you will inevitably have to spend more providing quality services for your customers, that's the way things work. Perhaps it's time to expand your hosting portfolio to include a VPS so you can host the server intensive sites separately?

If you're happy with HG generally it's worth considering sticking with them - better the devuil you know!

I'd suggest looking at ldcdc's http://whreviews.com/ site under the "Honest hosts" section, there's a lot of good information there.

Why not just try some hosts? I know a lot of hosts will offer a 30 day trial period to try them out. That is what I did with my current host. They let me try out hosting for 30 days before fully committing.

I suppose that would be better to take good dedicated server instead of large VPS.

Ok , so based on the prices and specs that I am looking at. I can do a couple of things.

I currently have 2 shared servers with about half of the accounts sitting on each. I could leave these where they are and add a small VPS and end up around 100 bucks. Or I could just move everything to a large VPS for around 100 bucks. Which would be better to do?

If I were you I would chose small dedicated server for this purpose. 60 sites is good amount of web sites for dedicated server.

I think you should follow Hostgators advice. 2nd solution is small dedicated server, I don't think it would be very expensive
