I have 3 existing ecommerce websites hosted & built at homestead.com. As the sites grow, they're becoming unmanageable due to the inadequacies of the homestead sitebuilder lpx program. Two example short comings are the inability to import formatted / linked text, and not being able to make a single change to multiples pages simultaneously.

I've attempted to bypass the sitebuilder shortcomings by editing the homestead files [xpf] in Dreamweaver, but obviously I'm confined to code editing alone [vs. editing in design mode], as the xpf files contain serverside code. I have successfully made some small code changes to multiple pages simultaneously via DW, but I still cannot find a way to bypass the problem of not being able to import formatted / linked text, which is my primary problem.

These 3 sites are a large source of my income, so the thought of transferring them to a new server and attempting to maintain them myself in a more flexible editor seems like a huge task / risk [from the vantage point of someone who has spent most of his time using a drag and drop editor]. It's a must that I maintain these sites myself [vs. hiring a webmaster], but I'm not real familiar with editing software, what's good or bad, etc.

I'm having difficulties finding a starting point to solving my problem. Should I continue to try and bypass the homestead editor short comings via dreamweaver, perhaps through creating an extension that may or may not allow me to edit my homestead xpf files in design mode? Or, due to severe lack of knowledge in the field of web development, am I overlooking much more practical solutions / options?

Michael

If your unable to grow your site, then that is a problem. What I would do is get a hosting account, and move your sites over. But keep your domains and everything running the way it is for a while.

Then take your time and start converting everything and figuring out how to maintain the files yourself, the way YOU want to. Once your comfortable, then you can point your domain to the the new server.

I think that homestead.com may have been a good way to start your businesses but you will eventually need to find a more robust solution to fit your needs. It's not an easy decision I know but it will be worth it in a year when you look back.
