7 - 10 days!!!!!!!! that's just taking the pis mickey I would say.
I did a transfer for a client yesterday and it took 12 minutes for the entire retagging process.

DNS might take a couple of days (up to maximum 4(96 hours) to propogate though.

Emails will continue to be delivered at the OLD host until DNS completes the propogation.

Just thinking out loud here but if you use an email client such as outlook, it may be a good idea to set up a new mail box using the new settings at the same time (unless you can choose to have the same username, password etc) that way you can delete the old mail box when it changes over and not miss anything.

Switch your hosting provider first and update your nameservers accordingly. I would transfer your domain after this has been done so that there shouldn't be any downtime in the 7-10 days it takes for the transfer to complete

The period of transfer is very long.

What hosting provider are you going to transfer your files from?

I suppose when you are changing web host you do mot need to transfer your domain name at all.

well, u can move everything over first, then, yr only disturb would be during the propagation period. hence, reduce the "Downtime"

You can keep on receiving emails during the domain transfer but better to download your email data using any email client such as OUTLOOK or you may change the hosting only leaving the domain on previous registrar.Only DNS modification will take at least 48-72 hours to propagate globally.

Don't put the eggs in one basket.

I would better buy hosting and register domains separately.

Transfer site over then domain name. Like everyone else said it should not take that long. Sounds like company you use does not want to make it easy.

Before to choose any company, be sure that it is reliable and has nice reputation.. It usually takes less time to transfer files and domains to another company.

Seems to joke to me, as only DNS propagation will take upto 48 Hours, any thing else can be transferred in minutes.
