I'm currently on a shared hosting plan, and my website has been going down for several hours at a time frequently. I suspect this is because of my crappy shared host (I use FatCow), so I am wondering if I need to switch to a VPS host. I don't have many visitors, only around 100 per day. What are your thoughts?

I believe that the best way to know this is to contact their support team and see how knowledgeable they are.

You just need a better host. You should only consider VPS or dedicated solutions if you'd actually be using the system as a whole.

- Are the problems you're facing related to Fatcows service or your website using a high amount of server resources?

If it's related to Fatcow's service then you should look for a new shared host and if it's your website itself then you may need to upgrade to a VPS.

Most sites that have only 100 visitors per day don't need a VPS. I recommend contacting your provider's technical support department and asking them to investigate the cause of the outages. They might be able to address your concerns by moving your account to a different shared server.

I think you need to contact the customer support of your host right now. Then if the problem still exist even they try to fixed it. Thats the time you will consider changing your host. Their are plenty of host available in the market right now. All you need to do is to look for those host with good reviews so that you will narrow your search. You may also consider those host that are top rated in the market. Once you have the list, thats the time you will look for their features, prices and 24/7 customer support so that you will compare them. In that way you will know what is best for you

My host insists that there is no problem and they have guaranteed 99% uptime. Is this a warning sign?

Hi eyu how are you checking that your website is unavailable? is it also showing as unavailable via uptime monitoring websites aswell? You can run a quick test on siteuptime.com (bottom left panel) - you could also try to monitor your website via pingdom.com

If you do continue to receive downtime I would look for a new provider. Shared will be more than surplus at this time.

99% uptime is very bad. Based on my experience with Fatcow's shared hosting, I'd say that you simply need better shared hosting, not a VPS. A VPS will cost you a pretty penny (you most likely need a fully managed one), and isn't really needed when you have only 100 visitors/day.

As per Dan suggestion, 99% is really not good, I would suggest you to contact your web hosting provider or switch to any other hosting provider to avoid downtime issue.

Read through the plan you have selected and write down on a piece of paper what they are offering you. Do you understand everything?
