An intro and some basic questions

Hello everyone, I'll start by saying this is a fantastic forum, so really glad to have stumbled across it. I have a few different hobbies, including CAD design and photo shop. I spend a fair bit of time on the Internet anyway and have recently become very interested in web design. I have no previous experience so go easy!

I had a few very basic questions which I was really struggling to get simple, clear answers to on other sites. Don't worry I'm not going to ask how to 'get rich quick' or anything stupid like that

I'm looking into setting up a website, partly as a hobby and partly as a way of sharing interests of mine with others. I want a proper website, not a blog or anything because I'd love to have a shot at designing a full website. Nothing fancy, just something to get my teeth into!

Anyway before I get too far into the process, I wanted to know whether a simple, but nicely designed website, with a few ads would be able to break even in the first year. I realize this is dependent on a few different factors, but, assuming I do my research properly, is it an unrealistic expectation for a website to make a return in the first 12 months?

If anyones willing to tell me how their first website did in it's first year that would be fantastic. I just need a little reassurance that it is possible to cover running costs.

Hopefully that all made sense

Many thanks

It depends on so many factors, but follow the normal rules of business here - don't expect to make anything in your first 6 months. It's possible you might, but don't count on it.

<2 cents>
With the web, people always make the mistake of rushing in, guns blazing, looking for a quick buck. The only people who make a quick buck on the web are the people that sell systems that allegedly allow you to make a quick buck. Steer clear of anything that offers such quick returns.
</2 cents>

Welcome to the forum and good luck!

Many thanks for the help people. I had another quick question. Are there any domain name and host providers you would suggest for someone new to all this?

I've been looking around and theres so many options, it's a bit overwhelming. I'm after something which would be suited to a small personal website. So something reasonably cheap but with the flexibility to allow me to expand my site.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

depends on the violation, some didn't get back because of getting in sandbox and not totally seen in the serp and not index anymore... if not 3 months would be enough to put back on track if the violation is not that big.

I would recommend you choose namecheap (www.namecheap.com) to register your domain. That way it is completely seperate to your website 'hosting provider'. Further to your question of hosting options, my advice is to start small you can always upgrade later. Choose a shared service first.

You will find the abundance of companies to register domains and order hosting solutions at.
Read customer hosting reviews to get a clear picture of true companies.

I will second namecheap.com's recommendation. They keep it simple, which is how domain registering should be.

There are many Domain Registrars in the Industry, so take the one that has nice reputation, at least several accreditations and discounts..

Ofcourse, a nicely designed website with proper research on the internet for getting information on relevant areas may provide you the desired returns and sometimes it may be unexpected or beyond your expectations.

Keep on taking advices from the tutors available at google and other search engines and I believe that It will not only cover running costs but will benefit you in long term.

Read some reviews and only proceed with the hosts that have a 30 day money back trial. That way you can really tell if they are right for you.

Also want to add that BBB seal approval and a host who has been around at least 10 years should be a good bet for you. You don't want to risk your content and site with a registrar/host who has only just opened.
