I would recommend you check out hosts from both. We host a lot of UK sites and they haven't experienced slow load times. If you get a host in the US I would recommend finding one with a server in the East Coast.
If you are selling to the US and Europe in equal amounts then I would suggest hosting in the US as it is cheaper. If most of your business is in Europe then I would recommend hosting in Europe.
I disagree with GMSmoothie about slow load times, I believe that US sites load noticeably slower then UK sites.
Richad it depends on the host, how they are managing their server. I have had slow load times on sites here in the US too. If the host is poorly managed then it's bound to be slow.

Fair point. But there is a difference even if you compare two good sites, I admit that some people don't notice the difference.
You have to way up the cost/speed issue.

Thank You for your quick response, but disregarding a speed issue, as my little experience, if I host a site in the USA, the query is 80% from USA and vice versa. How can we hack this?
I would say that if you are big enough, I would suggest using 2 hosts. One in europe for your european site and another host in US for your US based website...
Firefox is a new browser, which is much safer than IE, it blocks all popups and also prevents alot of spyware and viruses from getting onto your computer from malicious websites.
As already said it doesnt make much difference where the host is.. the main thing is how the host maintains their servers.. If you go for one of the top comapnies such as 1and1 or godaddy it isnt gonna matter where the server is as they have the top quality connections to the network..
Also it isnt exactly justified to compare the speed of bbc.co.uk to webmaster-talk..
For a start I dont think the budget of webmaster-talk is anywhere near the bbc's.. anyway I believe the BBC host their own servers and they would have top quality connections.. just thought I would say

The fact that its the BBC doesn't really make a difference, I get the same ping from my servers, I was just trying to make the point without advertising.
Generally I get <20ms for UK sites and >100ms for US sites.
