Hello,

What do I need to consider when choosing a host? What is the difference between cPanel and 'the other', which I can't remember the name of.

On some hosting options I see the mention of a contron panel, other I don't. Why do I need this, or is it alwasy included? At the request of a recent web designer, I engaged with (mt) Medial Templs and got the DV service for $50/month...this seems a bit expensive, but then again I don't know the reason he had me purchase that option. I have since cancelled the service because he took the money and ran.

Any help would be appreciated!

Good basics there.....still not sure on the control panel issue. My 'old' web designer who skipped on me was adamant he wanted to go with this DV package from (mt).

Cheers,

Dave

Well he was probably getting a referral payment.

Realistically control panels come down to a choice between cPanel and Plesk.

Do you need one? that really depends on what you need to do.

What I need is the ability to control my website, emails, etc.

Being that I don't understand what not have a control panel will do or not do...I guess that is really the first thing I need to sort out. From there, I can begin to compare apples to apples.

The control panel is what you'll essentially use to manage features related to your hosting package. For example, if the package allows for e-mail creation/ management, the control panel is where you'd look to get started and configure that feature. Additionally you can use it to manage domains, upload and manage files, view website statistics and visitors, create and manage databases, and log resource usage such as web space and data transfer. If there's something that's included in your web hosting package then the control panel is where you'll manage it.

It's industry standard that you'll receive some type of control panel, cPanel and Plesk being the most popular.

cPanel is probably the safest option, it's more "newbie friendly" than Plesk (IMO) and we always have less "hand holding" to do when letting clients wreak their own special kind of havoc on their own sites with cPanel.

The DV package from Mediatemple is the equivalent of a VPS or VDS (virtual dedicated server). The developer might have wanted it because he was used to having low level control over the hosting environment, which is lacking in shared hosting. It may have also been simply a personal preference, with no objective reasons behind it - simply what he was used to. Another alternative is that your site's traffic levels made it unlikely that shared hosting would be a good fit, but I doubt this was really the case, because a VPS (DV) with 512 MB of memory isn't really all that powerful either.

Hmmm...not sure really. Our traffic levels are quite low really (less than a hundred visits per day).

Chris.....I laughed out loud at the 'wreak their own special kind of havoc'.

The beat goes on.....

I think if you check official web site of wordpress you will be able to find some web hosting recommendations there.
In any case that web application is easy to use and install and that could be used on the 95% of linux hosts

I don't really know that this is the best way to find a wordpress host - those are simply companies that pay for those spots
