I have few questions about domain name registration and webhosting. Hope you can answer..

1. How do you rate 1and1 and iPower for their $19.99/mo plans? Do you have any recommendations for choosing web hosting company?

2. Some of the web hosting plans say it has "Included Domain Names - 5", does this mean they do the registration for the 5 domain names without extra charges? If so, is it advisable? What happens to domain names if I decide to discontinue the hosting services of that company? Can I still keep the domain names?

3. Some plans also say you can "Manage Unlimited Domains" and includes "200 Subdomains". What does this mean?

Thanks everyone.

1.) I wouldn't reccomend either one. I've heard some horror stories

2.) Included domains usually mean that you can have 5 domains all pointing to your hosting account. They won't actually register 5 domains for you for free.

3.) Managing domains means you can set your domain to their nameservers and you will have DNS control over them.
Sub-domains point to a sub-folder within your hosting account. ie: forums.mydomain.com in this example 'forums' is a sub-domain.

Hello, here are some answers to your questions
1.About 1and1 you should check this thread http://www.webmaster-talk.com/showthread.php?t=12448 . As far as i know Ipower is a big company with good support,i wanted to buy a dedicated from them and the answer time to the sent emails was little.
2.You can have 5 websites hosted on that account,if you register yourself the domains you will own them and you will be able to do what you want with them, but if the host register them for free i`m shure you won`t be able to host them with another provider.
3.A subdomain is something like this john.yourdomain.com.

Thanks for your responses so far.

Regarding the "included domains" here is what 1and1 says..
http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Hos...7005D3C5.TC60a
It clearly states that the domain registration is included when it says "included domain names - 5" in the plan description at http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Hos...a?__frame=_top

iPower also offers 10 free domains for a 12 month plan. Checkout the bottom portion at http://www.ipower.com/webhosting_virtual.html

So is this really free domain registration or am I still reading it wrong?

It looks like they are giving away 10 free domains names with a year plan. But it wouldn't hurt to double check with them just to be sure.

I would register your name seperate to your domain account - because most domain registrar's have less features than full hosts

Namecheap.com is a good place to buy a domain, seek hosting elsewhere

Becuase they are domain registrars, not web hosters. To them, web hosting is just a value added service, it's not their main source of income. Therefore quality and service will be low.

I too don't like godaddy and/or powweb.
For domains godaddy I heard is one of the best,
but for hosting not ! I recommend you to go
to some small company with good support and at
least 1 year hosting experience !
