Hi all:

Another novice user here. If we want to change hosts AND change the domain extension (had .org, due to availability, now have finally been able to register .net and parked .biz) and am building a new site for the new domain, with new emails, etc do I still need the former host to provide/change the DNS information? What about re-direction and email forwarding from old to new? What are the steps I need to take to do this seemlessly? I have registered the new domain with the new host and setup email. New site files not ready yet, so we need to keep current site running and make sure we transition well.

- Purchase new domain
- Find a new host

- Change the name servers on your new domain to the new hosts

To register the domain, I recommend http://www.namecheap.com

The old domain, you can add it onto the new account if you want to close your
hosting with the old provider, you must have add-on domain's to do this. You
can direct your website via most Registrar's control panel's/email to your new
domain.

Who registered your domain?

I've registered the new domain with Cedant, since I already had another site with them and have had good service there. I have no info about the old host except from the client I'm helping who just wants to move his site due to service and support issues. My question mainly is once we get the new site up, can he just contact the old host with the old domain and close the old site? what can I do to help insure old email connected to the old site gets forwarded to the new addresses?

Hi, you are best transfering the domain name out from your old host and in to Cedant.
Then you can park or add it with your new domain and webspace and you'll get all e-mails from both.

Good luck - if you need more help just shout!

consider to try selling ur old domain out if its no longer being used after your transfer to raise some fund for yourself. Get a hosting spec in your mind, start searching. To ensure there is no downtime, register the new domain and point them to the newly registered hosting name server. Check whois server for domain availability, test if its working. If it is transfer the site over, close ur previous one (if its a forum, to prevent data adding in old forum). Create a blank page in the old host as index and place the link to the new one.
