Hi guys,

I'm thinking of setting up a web server on one of my PCs at home. What software would I need? The only problem I have is that I don't have a static IP address, how can I overcome this?

Any help would be great.

The software you need depends on what you plan to do and your OS of choice... Linux or Windows? Both OS's usually come with most everything you need to setup a server.

For the IP, you can use a service such as no-ip.com

I want to use Windows XP, but what software would people recommend? It will only be a small server just to host a small website.

First of all you will need to install apache. You can download it from http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi . If you want to use php on your website you will need to install it too,so just give a visit to www.php.net .If you do want to use php i guess you will use mysql aswell so you will have to go to http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/ and download it.

Why do you assume he needs apache?

What version of XP are you running? Pro comes with IIS, and I think you can get PWS (Personal Web Server) for the Home edition off the cd. You don't need apache unless you don't want to or can't use IIS or PWS.

As raul mentioned, if you want PHP or mySQL, you'll need to download and install them from the locations he gave. Both of these will work fine with IIS, PWS, or Apache.

If you plan on using ASP, you will not be able to use Apache.

I'll have a look at PWS. How easy is it to install PHP or mySQL to PWS?

Again thanks for the help. I just want to know my options
