I would like to run a free hosting service like Geocities without the ads....

Most of the good ones went under.

I am looking for good free or cheep PHP software that will automate the process of members signing up, directories being created, member management, etc.

Does anybody know of a good solution?

May want to try webmin >> http://webmin.com/

Webmin is an *nix control panel as far as i know,i installed it on my box for my shell resselers. Paid2surf wants a php script wich will automate the signup proces so users can enjoy their free webhosting asap.

Yep but this will also help him as he is looking for a solution for hosting sites for free and have to pay little or no money so I think this was a good suggestion for him and a start if he has not already looked into it.

Also another panel that is not free but extremely cheap is CP+ it's like webmin but nicer >> http://cpplus.info/

cpplus is great.

Or you could try Cpanel and WHM

Cpanel is great as well, but rather pricy.

I have an advanced image hosting system with accounts, optional payments, plans, photo album. But I don't have a script for normal website hosting, sorry.
