Well, the topic says it all.
Is there any money to make from providing free hosting and image hosting?
What is your opinion and experience?

I have no experience in this, so I'm mainly guessing. The money could come from puttin ads on people's pages, but there are some great free hosts that don't force ads so you'd not be that successful with this idea and I think you could earn some money from the ads on your main site and perhaps support forums. You'll get quite some traffic and if people clicked on the links, you'd get some money ... I don't know any numbers ...

As a free web host, I would say that the market is very saturated with teenagers starting their own free web hosting and not lasting long. However, with a good business plan and some good marketing, you can get a profitable business. It is rare nowadays to see free web hosts last though.

I run and manage aurasia.net as my free web hosting business. I am very selective when it comes to the websites that I provide free hosting to. I basically do everything manually.

Most webhosts simply put an ad on your website like google's or other.

I run one, we just started, we are going to keep at it.

Although we force no ads, so we do ask that you post in the forums, averaging around 15 posts a month or more. Ads on the main page, and repeat visitors. It's not a get rich quick option.

I agree with luckyforlife. Putting ads on your main page won't get you rich. You need great contents and frequent updates.

I've recently starting a free image host (link is in sig), and have made about $40 from Google Ads since launching it around a month ago.

If you target your ads well, and market the site, you should have no problem making a profit, although it's not something you could make a living out of.

I ahve no experience hosting others, but i have used MANY free hosts. The best way to do free hosting is to ahve to review each site, that way you don't get junky things, and you should also offer better hosting for small fees, for example 50mb space, and 1Gb bandwidth for free hosting. 1$ hosting with 150mb space 1.5GB bandwidth or somethign, the reason ppl go for free hosting is they don't have the money, or they are cheap. Make is cheap (inexpensive). Also have ads on your hosting page.

Another way would be to select who you host carefully. Many of the requests nowadays are not that great and the user usually lose interest within 1-3 months. You'll need to take note of that.

I was planning to start a free hosting company soon, but i wasnt sure as there is so many and i dont think anyone could beat angelfire and big search engine companys offering free space! i just dont get why some people go for places that give so little bandwidth a month and ads , when my ISP gives me a lot of bandwidth and no banners or popups!

But hey i myself have used free hosting one being www.hostultra.com and they have to be bad they pop up activex and spyware installs the lot ! i fully dont recommend them at all, i never noticed this until i sent someone to my site and they where like "Why you trying to install stuff on me"

If you are to run free hosting! I strongly disagree with installing activex! It scares people

Free hosting, i feel, is becoming obsolete... i get a great deal 4.99 a month, 3 .com domains included with 2,000 MB web space 50 GB brandwith... its getting so cheap! i think i'd much rather put up the 5 dollars a month than having free limited, ad infested hosting.... but then again, ive never used a free host.. ive always had a convienent folder on my cousins webserver :P

That's right, now we are not pushing ads on the sites. And more than enough space/transfer for almost anyone not abusing the servers.

The days of hosting for a fee I believe are going away.
