When you say sever or dedicated does it mean they give you your own server? As long as you pay the fee?

So if I went and bought my own server I would get free webhosting? Or how does the server thing work? Like if I want to get my own server I somehow get it to host my site on it and have unlimited bandwidth?

I dont mean to sound stupid but I have never understood the whole server thing. I know all hosts have these big servers so is that how they offer webhosting to you?

If you rent a dedicated server, you will pay a monthly fee. You don't own the server, your just using it.

If you went out and bought your own server, then you'll need to rent space in a datacenter to put it in. This is called colocating

Either way, you will still pay for bandwidth. Bandwidth can be measured a number of ways such as 1000Gb /month or unlimted with a 10/Mbs port. Of course, the more you pay, the better the deal.

Well I saw I could get my own 80gb 2.6ghz intel server for about 600.00 and I wondered what was better over time. And how it worked. Yes you dont own it just rent it.

How much if I got a server would hosting it be? Like how would I find out?

2000GB bandwidth is around $75-150 also the size of your server (slot in servers are the best because they are small) http://www.pofo.de/server.jpg http://www.theplanet.com/colo/index.html

In a small hosting setup, you can have most of hosting applications installed on one server.

When you plan for a big hosting operation, you have dedicated server cluster for most applications ie Mail, CP, DNS, SQL, CFM etc.

Most demanding part is server security and server uptime (uptime) as you ensure customers web applications runs 24 hrs and 365 days.
