I'm currently in the middle of getting a domain name back for a new client.
The client is Sam Rivers, jazz legend. The domain in question is samrivers.com.
By the way, he's definitely still a great musician at 81, but broke.
When I first started doing Sam's site (now at rivbea.com), he had let samrivers.com expire, and had been trying to get it back for about a year already.
I went ahead and contacted the guy who bought the domain name (he calls himself Trick John) to find out the current price. Initially the asking price was thousands of dollars, then it went down to around $800, and now he's asking $265.
I was suspicious, but thought we better jump on it, so I asked Trick John how to do the payment and transfer process. He gave me his real name address and phone number, and a few ways of moving the money.
So far so good.
When he gets our money, he says he'll move the name to a new account we're supposed to create at a domain registry service called acht.com. A quick "whois" shows this domain is also Trick John's.
I might feel more secure if he didn't call himself "Trick John"... We haven't sent the money yet.
Has anyone had to buy back a domain name? Is this pretty standard? Am I at the right forum?
