I want to get IPB. The requirements are mysql and PHP. The plan I want to get it the cheapest one here:
https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosti...?se=%2B&ci=260

I want to know does it need more than 1 mysql thing to operate?

Also if you look at the cheap plan it says choose windows or linux and below it it says linux is the only one with mysql does that mean the server runs on linux and I have to use it to have IPB since the windows one is ASP?

Is that what its saying?

Thanks

Yes. Under that plan, you would need to get the Linux-based choice. However, it does sound like both of them have MySQL.

Linux is a more stable operating system so in that sense is it better. If you are more familiar with Windows it may be best for you to host in windows. I would recommend using Linux as unless you are moving to dedicated you would primarily use a nice interface like Cpanel or the likes and would never have to do anything with the actual Operating System.

So windows or linux unless I get a dedicated server its just going to be under a cpanel anyways and I would not even have to mess with the OS? But I guess on the cheap plan my only choice is to get linux because I have to have mysql!
Thanks for the help!

Linux is not more stable then windows and the fact that you use Windows at home makes no difference to what type of hosting you should get. It basicly comes down to preference and needs. As you will be using a shared hosting environment, you will not notice the difference between the two. If you plan on using ASP, ASP.net, SQL Server/Access you need Windows. Otherwise it's your choice as both operating systems will handle PHP and mySql. Linux tends to be cheaper though because of the lower licencing costs.

Being new to web hosting and wanting to use a PHP based message board. I would reccomend Linux, although Windows would be able to handle it just fine as well as long as the hosting company has installed PHP and MySql (usually the case).

Anacrusis, I did say that it doesn't matter about using Windows at home. You Bring up a good point about ASP.net

Anacrusis said my thoughts exactly. With hosting it all comes down to what you need and how much you're willing to pay. Windows, as mentioned, is more expensive, but runs software not usually (I know there's some exceptions) found on *nix based systems. If you're new to hosting (as I've gotten the impression), then I would recommend going with a Linux based system. Many hosts use the cPanel software for you to manage your site, and if you're new to hosting, the that's the way to go. cPanel provides a easy-to-use, yet powerful interface with which you can manage your site.

You can get
some cheap webhosting plan
with 1 or 2GB Bandwith
for IPB and you can install it
from fantastico or scripts library from
cPanel with one click instalation...

The Big Hosting Companies like POWWEB
or LYCOS have their own control panel
and you must take a lot of time to isntall

IPB by yourself ...

I can suggest you to get some big cheap webhosting plan
with uptime at least 99.5% ...

and install IPB from cPanel or PLESK...

There are UNIX servers with ASP included on the plans ...

IPB takes like 5 minutes to install by hand. Plus, PowWeb is annoying. I had CONSTANT MySQL downtimes when I used to host with them, and their support was horrible (this was two years ago).

I would defiantly avoid buying web hosting from Godaddy there domains are good but there web hosting is very bad, vBulletin users have had many problems with errors arising and functions not working as they should. I'm not sure if this would be the same case with IPB.
