Hello Guys,

I was wondering how easy or difficult it is to manage one of those dedicated servers to host about 20 websites. I know it might be a little expensive this way but I want to have my own server and I do not care if I pay 350 a month.

Do those servers come with a cpanel like in reseller accounts?

One way or another I have to do it this way, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also see that some of those dedicated servers come with different HDs Example:SCSI or IDE or SCSI Raid 1, 2, 3. What do they mean, and what are their advantages? (I see that IDE options have much more storage space like 2x250 compared to 2x73 SCSI)

Which companies are trustable and offer reasonably priced services?

Managing a dedicated server is not easy. You have to know about networking, security and Linux. You will also need to know how to compile and configure software such as the Linux kernal, Apache, PHP, MySql and BIND. Most of this will be done from the command line.

If you don't have experience in any of these areas then I highly suggest you don't jump into it quite yet. If you have paying customers, you need to know how to fix things when they break. Otherwise you'll have no customers.

If you don't know the difference between SCSI and IDE, you probably arn't ready to run a server.

I suggest taking 6 months to a year just playing around. Get yourself a cheap PC and install Linux and fool around with it. Read some good books on administering a server and internet security.

All it takes is one hacker/spammer to get in your system and take it down. You need to make sure you can lock it down tight and know how to spot an intruder and follow their footsteps to figure out how they got in and how to clean up after them.

If you really want to host other peoples sites right away and you are only going to have 20 or so customers. You don't need a dedicated server and the headache that comes with it. A reseller account would do you just fine.

However, you can rent servers from places like ev1 and ThePlanet where you do get root control, but it comes with cPanel/WebHostManager. That might be a good place to start as well.

If your sites use much resources you will have to get a dedicated server. If you decide to get one , i can recomand you a good sysadmin ( does amasing things on FreeBSD), a very cheap one since he is living in Romania.

Yes i agree with you but it depends on the resources needed to host these sites. If one ore more of them use a lot of resources and have a lot of mysql querys per second than he needs a dedicated server. Since you host only 20 sites i think a reseller account would fit nice your needs for the moment.
