Hi, tropical

First you should look for a company that has good support at least 24/7 support or phone support. Second how long have they been in business or if they are reliable. Also try going for a plan that you want and need. Start out small then grow. For that look for a company that can upgrade you to other packages as you grow. Also I advise you not to go for free space unless you dont want to look profesional. With free web spaces ussually you have to add some of their ads. You dont want that if you want to look like a pro.

Good luck

The 3 things are
the speed (at least 100.0MBPS)
second is support (24x7 - phone is better for support)
see if there are LEGAL company ... Does they have office
for direct payments ... illegal companies can take your money
and go away from the business ...

At least 1 year is good for a comapny that will have good experinse
when it iwll solve your problrms ...

Forth thing is uptime guarantee
at least 99.9% uptime garantee must have your company ...

and the fifth thing is 30 days money back guarantee ...

And the plans must not be cheap, extra cheap or cheaper ...

Get a company with normal prices and follow my steps ...

See also theri hosting DATA CENTER
get tracert companydomain.com
and see their hosting datacenter
two of the best are THEPLANET.COM and Ev1servers.net

I think I would be helpful for you ...
Thanks,

A few things to look for...
make sure they have a phone number to call and a postal address. "fake" companies will tend to hide these things from you.
Don't hesitate to call and/or email prospective companies with questions. This way you can determine response time and how easy it is to work with them.

If they only accept Paypal, be leary. Good hosts would have spent the money and time to aquire a credit card merchant account.

DO NOT make your descicion on price alone, becuase you will get what you pay for.

Do a google search on prospective companies to see if you can find any history about the company that may affect your desicion.

As stated before, be sure there is some kind of money back gurantee and don't sign up for any more then a month at a time. This way if they turn out to be a bad host, at least you won't lose much.

If you need any help, post here.

Go here http://www.upperhost.com/ for some decent information concerning web hosting, supposedly an independant top ten hosting list, with no ads, don't know about the independant part but they do have some decent articles + general info. Also if you want to submit your hosting company to them for review you can.

Thanks all for the replies.

I want to start small and then upgrade. One company i contacted offered unlimited bandwidth support for a 25 mb plan. What is unlimited bandwidth and what about upgrading to a larger space or changing hosts altogether ? I heard that there are issues involved with changing hosts which might affect search enigine rankings. What are these issues and how do i choose a plan which gives me the mobility i need.

Don't go with a host that offers unlimited bandwidth, there is no real true unlimited bandwidth (bandwidth = amount of traffic to a website). 25mb is not much at all especially if a paid product, look for something around 250-1000MB and really no more than 30GB of bandwidth to start with, if that is to much later on you can upgrade or downgrade.

Changing hosts and search engine rankings shouldn't be affected unless your site is offline for so many days/weeks

http://www.whreviews.com has some useful information

I am pretty new myself to all this but make sure if there is a feature your considering that your host actually allows it. The host I started with said they could run what I wanted but when I actually attempted it they told me I had to upgrade to get the feature. After I upgraded it ended up still not working because they had the feature turned off unless I bought a extra software package. So just be cautious and like everyone else said if it sounds too good to be true it is probably a scam.

Hi, Tropical.

I made a topic here for my hosting plans. They are perfect for websites that are just starting off. You can always upgrade your plan at no cost later on.

A little biased don't you think? You were simply advertising/spamming your own services. Don't do it again.
